Prime Minister #NarendraModi will visit #Rwanda and #Uganda before heading to #SouthAfrica to attend the 10th addition of the #BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. Modi will first stop in Rwanda for a two-day โ€˜historicโ€™ visit, the first by an Indian premier. He will then head to Uganda on July 24 and from there to South Africa.

PM Modi will be received by Rwandan President #PaulKagame when he arrives in the country on the first leg of his three-nation tour. After visiting Rwanda, the prime minister will head to Uganda on July 24 for a two-day visit, the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister since 1997. The prime ministerโ€™s programme in Uganda includes a call on President #YoweriMuseveni, restricted and delegation level talks, and participation at an India-Uganda joint business event. After visiting both the nations, the PM will head to South Africa on June 25, where he will be participating in the BRICS Summit.

On his second trip to the continent as the PM that begins on July 23 #NarendraModi will also visit #Rwanda besides #SouthAfrica for the #BRICS Summit on July 26-27. Indo-Africa ties have recieved a new boost since the third edition of their Summit here in 2015 that was attended by over 40 heads of state and government from the continent. Over the past three years Indian Presidents and Vice Presidents have frequented #Africa with President #RamNathKovind making all his first 3 foreign trips to the continent. Similarly #India has hosted leaders from across the length and breadth of the continent. Modi is no stranger to #Uganda and its President having visited the country as the Gujarat Chief Minister. Address to the Ugandan Parliament will be highlight of his 3-nation visit.

Chinese President #XiJinping arrived in #Africa on Saturday (July 21) to kick off a 4-nation visit during which he will be seeking deeper military and economic ties. The trip comes as his rival in a bitter trade war, the US Trump administration, shows little interest in the world's second most populous continent. Xi's trip will take him from #Senegal to #Rwanda ahead of his participation in a summit of the #BRICS emerging economies in #SouthAfrica that starts on Wednesday (July 25).

In Senegal, Xi will meet with President #MackySall. According to the IMF, Senegal had economic growth of 7.2% last year. Its largest trading partner is the #EuropeanUnion, notably #France. China is already Africa's largest trading partner, and opened its first military base on the continent last year in the #HornofAfrica nation of Djibouti. #Djibouti this month launched a China-backed #freetrade zone it calls the largest in Africa. After surpassing the US in arms sales to Africa in recent years, China this month hosted dozens of African military officials for the first #ChinaAfrica defense forum.

Global finance leaders called on Sunday (July 22) for stepped-up dialogue to prevent trade and geopolitical tensions from hurting growth, but ended a two-day #G20 meeting with little consensus on how to resolve multiple disputes over U.S. tariff actions. The #financeministers and central bank governors from the worldโ€™s 20 largest economies warned that growth, while still strong, was becoming less synchronized and downside risks over the short- and medium-term had increased.

U.S. Treasury Secretary #StevenMnuchin said #G7 allies were taking seriously his calls to eliminate tariffs, non-tariff barriers and subsidies among the group, and the #Trump administration would pursue such ideas in trade talks next week with #EuropeanCommission President #JeanClaudeJuncker in Washington.

Chinaโ€™s President #XiJinping pledged during a visit to #Senegal on Saturday (July 21) to strengthen economic ties with #Africa, a continent already awash with cheap Chinese loans in exchange for minerals and huge construction projects. Xi arrived in Senegal on Saturday for a 2-day visit to sign bilateral deals, the first leg of an Africa tour that will also take him to #Rwanda and #SouthAfrica, the latter for a summit of #BRICS countries: #Brazil, #Russia, #India, China and South Africa. China now does more trade with Africa than any other nation does, and its consistent overtures to the continent contrast sharply with the United States, whose President Donald Trump has shown little interest in it.
