Today we’re making the Nik Collection available to everyone, for free.
Photo enthusiasts all over the world use the Nik Collection to get the best out of their images every day. As we continue to focus our long-term investments in building incredible photo editing tools for mobile, including Google Photos and Snapseed, we’ve decided to make the Nik Collection desktop suite available for free, so that now anyone can use it.
The Nik Collection is comprised of seven desktop plug-ins that provide a powerful range of photo editing capabilities -- from filter applications that improve color correction, to retouching and creative effects, to image sharpening that brings out all the hidden details, to the ability to make adjustments to the color and tonality of images.
Starting March 24, 2016, the latest Nik Collection will be freely available to download: Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro and Dfine. If you purchased the Nik Collection in 2016, you will receive a full refund, which we’ll automatically issue back to you in the coming days.

This image caught our eye with its cool blue hues and simple composure, not to mention that this type of colorful image is a great twist on a monochromatic image. Do you ever feel that you are drawn to colors that match your mood? Does it affect your editing? Like maybe red or orange hues are great if you are feeling energetic and free, but something like these blues may appeal more when you're feeling calm and content? Something to think about. Check out the striking color +Ivan Slade captured in an Australian sky... a calm and quiet scene, but the color is giving off so much energy that it is almost chaotic. The way it plays with our emotions, tugging between peace and chaos is wonderful!
A lovely and kind of weird sunset yesterday over Narrabeen lakes on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia.
I found this fallen tree at the lakes a while ago and have been back many times trying to catch a good sunset. Yesterday finally delivered! Must have looked hilarious standing on one leg balancing on the tree over the water trying to get this shot....

Thank you to +Saurabh Paranjape for this fantasy-like shot in the Scottish Highlands. The wide angle, slow shutter, and high saturation all mix together for an almost surreal landscape that we really enjoy!

If there's one thing this shot taught me, it's that preparation is everything.
This is one of my favorite shots from our Scotland trip and it almost didn't happen. I arrived at this spot in pouring rain, and given I had a very limited time in the Highlands, my choices were either a) wait it out or b) walk away. Of course, with a view like this, you wait it out. So, having researched this location before, I set up my gear exactly where I wanted, with exactly the settings I needed, and proceeded to wait for almost an hour in the cold rain with my jacket protecting the camera and midges proclaiming open season on any exposed skin.
I got about a 10 minute window where the skies above me parted and I was able to fire off some quick shots before the rain returned with a vengeance and I had to run back to the car to avoid losing my precious gear to the elements.
Shot on a Canon 5D Mark II with a 17-40mm f/4 L lens at 19mm, f/11, 6s, ISO100

This stadium shot by +Gerard Blacklock is a perfect example of HDR photography. With odd lighting situations such as these (it looks like low natural light, bright stadium lights, partially outdoor and partially "indoor" subjects all in one scene), a tripod and multiple exposures is the best way to capture the whole scene in normal, even light. Great image, Gerard!

Isn't a perfectly flat horizon line a thing of beauty? And in this image by +Joachim Dyndale, that line divides so many contrasts: man vs. nature, open space vs. over crowding, cool tones vs. warm tones. What a view! Thanks Joachim :)
