Inspiration for artificial biologically inspired computing is often drawn from neural systems. This article shows how to analyze neural systems using information theory with the aim of obtaining constraints that help to identify the algorithms run by neural systems and the information they represent. Algorithms and representations identified this way may then guide the design of biologically inspired computing systems. The material covered includes the necessary introduction to information theory and to the estimation of information-theoretic quantities from neural recordings. We then show how to analyze the information encoded in a system about its environment, and also discuss recent methodological developments on the question of how much information each agent carries about the environment either uniquely or redundantly or synergistically together with others. Last, we introduce the framework of local information dynamics, where information processing is partitioned into component processes of information storage, transfer, and modification – locally in space and time. We close by discussing example applications of these measures to neural data and other complex systems.

Part of my plans to (remotely) devote the weekend to the IndieWeb Summit in Portland were hijacked by the passing of Muhammad Ali. Wait… What?! How does that happen?

igsyU1XmA year ago, I opened started a publishing company and we came out with our first book Amerikan Krazy in late February. The author has a small backcatalogue that’s out of print, so in conjunction with his book launch, we’ve been slowly releasing ebook versions of his old titles. Coincidentally one of them was a fantastic little book about Ali entitled Muhammad Ali Retrospective, so I dropped everything I was doing to get it finished up and out as a quick way of honoring his passing.

But while I was working on some of the minutiae, I’ve been thinking in the back of my mind about the ideas of marginalia, commonplace books, and Amazon’s siloed community of highlights and notes. Is there a decentralized web-based way of creating a construct similar to webmention that will allow all readers worldwide to highlight, mark up and comment across electronic versions of texts so that they can share them in an open manner while still owning all of their own data? And possibly a way to aggregate them at the top for big data studies in the vein of corpus linguistics?

I think there is…

However it’ll take some effort, but effort that could have a worthwhile impact.

I have a few potential architectures in mind, but also want to keep online versions of books in the loop as well as potentially efforts like hypothes.is or even the academic portions of Genius.com which do web-based annotation.

If anyone in the IndieWeb, books, or online marginalia worlds has thought about this as well, I’d love to chat.

Introduction
I wear two general hats on what most would consider polar opposite sides of the spectrum:

I run an entertainment management and production company and consult for a variety of entities in the entertainment industry drawing on 17+ years of experience in the areas of distribution, finance, production, representation, and marketing for television and filmed entertainment.

I also operate an engineering consultancy with expertise in genetics related engineering (microscopy, epifluorescence, microinjection, micromanipulation, transgenics, stem cell research, in-vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, electroporation, animal models (including: C. elegans, drosophila, Xenopus, zebra fish, Saccharomyces cerevisiae)), signal processing, imaging, communications, experimental design, custom laboratory equipment. Experience includes work with several recent Nobel prize winners in physiology/medicine and chemistry.

I also do a lot of volunteer work for The Johns Hopkins University including, but not limited to, work with the Alumni Council, the Society of Engineering Alumni, the Los Angeles Chapter of the Alumni Association, the National Alumni Schools Committee, and the team managing several of Hopkins' social media accounts in Twitter, Facebook and other platforms. When available I also teach courses for and support their Film and Media Studies program.

My interests include: communication theory, information theory, genetics, evolutionary theory, mathematics (particularly abstract algebra and analysis), corporate finance, higher education, production and operations management, and digital distribution.

I've had dinner with Ray Bradbury; I was the first person for whom Jesse Jackson personally signed a copy of Green Eggs and Ham; Maya Angelou physically bowled me over while running late to give a lecture; John Waters reminisced with me about his movies during the 70's while watching Richard Nixon's funeral; I built the microinjector that was used to insert stem cells into the spinal cord of the first human clinical patient; Dr. P.M. Forni gave me a personal thanks in the opening of his book "The Thinking Life"
