Thanks for your insights! I had fun (sort of) writing this:

Heard the exact same thing about the Vilnius ghetto from a tour guide there in 2004.

Yes it is good. I cited it in my article about Surkov's article (Surkov says Westerners are are looking for alternatives and 'seeing Russia.')

Whoa, Facebook surprised face needed for that one! Seems unusual even for someone from the neighborhood.

Nice overview (but please, no 'Maidan square').

I finally read the article itself -- unbelievable, fascinating. Unlike the U.S., Russia has no Deep State, but it has a Deep People (who cannot be plumbed by opinion polls, which is convenient at the moment.) Maybe Meddy misread it as Deep Purple in the memo.

It took me a while to figure out what the Czech names for cities close by -- Vienna, Dresden, Munich -- were referring to.

If Catalonia gained independence and officially called itself Catalunya, and/or spelled Barcelona differently, would you resist that as well? And what about the Sukhumi/Sukhum question?

Spain/Espana is not a good example. It's Cardiff at least in part because the English language (English spelling) has been dominant for a long time in Wales and the rest of Britain. Like Russian in Ukraine. That's why Kyiv is usually spelled Kiev in English.

Yes I've heard that argument. But what if the UK split up and an independent Wales called its capital Caerdydd? Would you refuse to go along? Or for that matter, if Abkhazia was recognized by the UN as an independent country and wanted to call its capital Sukhum?

RFE/RL has used Kyiv for a long time. Kiev has started to look really bad to me.

Just realized that webinar is an anagram of wine bar. Not sure I've been to either.

Slightly 😀. Either that or the Surkov article helps set up a competition for that role.
