By f/ Maldives. This quote is almost exactly what one Ecuadorean said to me about new admin figuring out old admin's deals: “We have to find out... what happened, because nobody really knows... we need China’s help to get to the bottom of it.”

This is a feature of deals in many countries. Seems it would be in China’s interests to make deals transparent enough that they survive changes of government. Saw the same thing in Maldives

Wow, this is a fantastic story. There seems to be a theme of China showing up in small island countries. Here's my 2015 visit to the Bahamas:

Can’t emphasize enough though, context! The US has the greatest # of companies in the surveillance industry, followed by places like Germany, UK, Israel, and France. One just wants to be careful this doesn’t become another form of whataboutism. Story was looking at China-Ecuador.

Citizens of less wealthy countries in Latin America and Africa aren’t stupid. They know Chinese companies export the nicer stuff to the US/Europe, and resent getting the B grade stuff, which breaks faster.

One more thing on China, Ecuador, surveillance (Sunday desk organizing and seeing old notes). One document from the Ecuadorean government showed an awareness that at least some officials were concerned Huawai was offloading its cheaper/leftover stock products to the country.

Spokesperson for New York AG Letitia James to me just now: "The Office of New York State Attorney General Letitia James has launched an investigation related to the National Rifle Association (NRA). As part of this investigation, the Attorney General has issued subpoenas."

Lack of transparency in China-Ecuador deals to the point that the new administration CAN'T FIND SOME OF THE CONTRACTS the previous Correa administration had cut with Chinese companies.

A really fair look at China's Belt and Road Initiative by . I'd add, after our own China-Ecuador piece earlier this week, that one of the problems is the lack of transparency in a lot of these deals.

Based on the quid pro quo I hear about, it’s not that honest courtesy call it’s supposed to be and often becomes a negotiation. I am totally fine with having both parties agree to a recorded interview so there are no mistakes, but no one gets to review quotes or text.

Because people are constantly regretting things they say and this is an opportunity for them to negotiate new terms, which they absolutely try (and sometimes successfully) do.

Germany's #13, USA is #48 in this year's World Press Freedom Index and of course a lot of different variables accounted for that but just letting you know about this 👇🏼👇🏼:

I was shocked to learn it's pretty common practice for German journalists to send the quotes over to the person they interviewed for final review before publication.

As a reporter who has spent about half of my career in the country on the bottom of the list (China), I‘m reminded every day how robust our press freedom is in the US (notwithstanding Trump rhetoric). I get that RSF is sending a message but the US ranking is misleading IMHO.

I take issue w/ the US rank on the press freedom list. Yes, Trump’s rhetoric is dangerous, and is the main justification. But a free press has been a check on the president. The UK and Australia, with much weaker protections against libel suits, are ahead of the US. That is odd.

Which reminds me of one of the more stunning lines from 's book, when she once asked a 15-year-old Chinese girl what she wanted to be when she grew up: "I want to spend time with corrupt officials... Because they're the ones who know how the word works."
