We send our condolences to the victim's family concerning this morning's terror attack in Gush Etzion. Violence will never be a means to end the conflict. Israel needs a secure, internationally recognized border to prevent such attacks.

Fair, but mostly unrelated to the current case. You agree CMM has generally been well-monitored. Impact on participants is clear, broader impact less so. Maybe expand them for more impact. But Admin's cutoff is intended as leverage to get PA to the table, not as program critique.

Over the last few years, has been working - together with local and international partners - to highlight the important role that - civil society work has in peacebuilding, and to make such work more effective ../

Here an independent evaluation (which cites several others) demonstrating clear impact. USAID also have rigorous internal M&E procedures in place. These programmes change lives for the better & build trust between communities

I don’t blame them either. I/P drenched in injustice, almost all 1way, & this another facet. Reality is that anti normalisation accelerates worst traits in Israeli society. Shouldn’t be up to Pals to alter that, but nothing about their lives should be way it is. Yet here we are

Literally EVERY Israeli progressive activist I know has a story like this. Even before these cuts: we’re not creating those moments, changing those life-courses. So we’re harvesting racist, ignorant, societies and electorates who are increasingly fated to live cheek to jowel

Because you began to see Palestinians as human beings rather than hollowed out demographic/security props in an internal Israeli conversation? Cos if I’m even partially right: isn’t it something to be scaled exponentially?

Knowledge of each other, & terrifying ideas around expulsion & denial of rights, just as possibility of partition dies, and reality of sharing the land in some way as equals becomes urgent priority. Contact is radical in such a context. And Being cynical about it is dangerous

Yes. Palestinians often felt they would be instrumental to liberation. They weren’t. They were (less now) often badly executed & betrayed Israeli structural bias. But hard truth is that without them- and with the wall- a generation is coming of age in both societies with zero

With respect, thats horseshit Gilad. There’s plenty of data that says otherwise. And attitudes of youth in Israel utterly deprived of contact with Pals says otherwise. And- anecdotallly- pretty much every vocal progressive in Israel i know (inc you) engaged in these programmes

Having run Seeds of Peace for several years, what Trump Administration is doing to Israelis and Palestinians is cruel, stupid, and counterproductive. It’s precisely because there is no peace process that you need these P2P programs.

The “peace process” has had a healthy dose of magical thinking for long time. But this is a new apex of bullshit. The idea that last 18months of Trump policy is laying the table for a peace agreement is borderline insane

No "but" here, Mr. Greenblatt! In your zeal to punish the Palestinians, you are punishing us, Israelis, by making it harder for our children and grandchildren to meet their neighbors, better understand them, and hopefully, one day, reach peace and reconciliation with them.

Also worth mentioning that Palestinian participants in these programs are often criticized on their own side for engaging in "normalization" w/Israelis. They are brave to do so. Now the US is abandoning them, the Pals whose attitudes/actions are exactly those we say we want.

Yes. Jordanians & Israelis had talks in ‘48-‘50. Syria offered a deal in ‘50s. 242 offered basis of peace after ‘67, & ‘73 happened BECAUSE Israel did not respond to Sadat overtures. In every instance, territory was easier to divide demographically & attitudes were less hostile

This funding cut "puts Israelis and Palestinians on a collision course for further conflict."
