Let me fix this headline: "UAE business mogul looking to compound his wealth sees opportunity in pulverizing the Palestinian struggle for liberation."

New bipartisan House resolution would resolve that criticizing Israeli policies/actions = support for Hamas/terrorism.

And this, really, is why I don't do these kinds of things anymore. You don't really benefit from that proximity to power, but the power benefits from proximity to you. And not in ways you can control.

They really believed that if the Yemenis whose weddings we bomb by accident from 7,000 miles away were shown pictures of happy, thriving American Muslims, things would be fine. The very people in a position to change things fundamentally misunderstood the problem.

I was stunned by this. I heard this line of reasoning several times, and the more I heard it, the more I was filled with this dread I can't quite describe...these smart, educated, enthusiastic people thought this was a real solution.

They seemed--all of them--convinced that the way forward with the "Muslim world" was to show people that American Muslims are thriving and are treated well. That would prove the US was not at war with Islam. Image problem solved!

And you don't know how that photo op is going to be used. Or rather, you do, which I found out later, when I had several conversations with very earnest, well-meaning ppl within various 'international relations' branches of the government...

But that's not where change happens. The important personage is there for only a few minutes and then ushered out. These are essentially photo ops.

It's tempting to think, when invited to something like this, that you can use that proximity to effect change--have exactly the right 2 minute conversation with the President or the Sec of State or their aides or whoever--that will sway the course of history in some positive way.

Which I hastened to do, and then felt like an idiot. You can't take me anywhere. I do things like bungle shoes. Rest of the evening was uneventful. And something struck me then, which would strike me yet more later...

During a break for applause, this Secret Service woman (suit, ear piece, no nonsense chignon) comes over to me and says in the most withering voice I have ever heard, 'Ma'am, please put your shoes back on.'

And when Hillary came in to give her speech, we all stood, as per protocol. But I'd just had a baby and my feet were already starting to hurt in these BLESSED SHOES, so during the speech, I discreetly slipped them off and stood there in my stocking feet.

I said golden twice. MUCH GOLD. Anyway, you get the idea. We were still riding the high of hope and change and Yes We Can. Anyway, so I went to this thing. And I wore high heels, which I almost never do, because they hurt one's damn'ed feet.

The only Washington DC iftar I actually went to was hosted by Hillary Clinton when she was still Sec of State, wayyyy back at the beginning of Obama's 1st term. The days were golden. We were going to close Gitmo! End the war in Iraq! A golden age was coming!

Okay in honor of this White House iftar nobody is actually going to, a little thread on government iftars, involving high heels and my run in with the Secret Service, but also a more somber observation about these kinds of events...

“Because we spend so much time debating when (or if) criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic, we rarely get around to assessing how pro-Israel narratives exhibit anti-Arab racism. It seems important to rectify this problem.” -

We should NOT HAVE COPS IN SCHOOLS. "More than 70 student arrests have been made since Gordon’s tenure [Waynesboro Area School District Police officer] began in 2014, according to annual safety reports filed the district with the Pennsylvania Department of Education."
