Haha - well, I would have had to if I hadn't published the report before it happened. Whether Trump would be swayed into staying in Syria as an anti-Iran strategy is one of the five "key questions" discussed, but I guess maybe it's been answered now.

Trump points out he said he'd quit Syria all along, which is true—but he's apparently still unaware his staff was saying the opposite. Hard to know who to blame for the U.S. incoherence problem: the officials who subvert Trump's policy, or Trump, whose job it is to oversee them.

Sixteen years of AKP rule have reshaped Turkey, but its new political culture is less Islamist than “Erdoganist,” building on nationalistic, state-centric ideological foundations infused with a new strand of pious conservatism. Or so says :

That none of the hawkish Senators outraged about this withdrawal have been willing to consider this policy that would directly help Syrians in US sector (which is still in ruins) tells you exactly how high the welfare of Syrians ranks in their agenda for continued US presence.

One thing politicians and officials could do to help those who will actually be most threatened by US withdrawal would be to push for admittance of refugees from US area of operations and especially for those whose cooperation w/US might endanger them under regime/Tur occupation.

the other part of this is. I don't think ten million Iran bad speeches by Trump aides means all that much. Push comes to shove, he doesn't want a war with Iran, he is not interested in regime change, and he doesn't want high gas prices.

All was decided in Trump-Erdogan call, U.S. official tells Reuters: State Department will exit Syria in 24h and troops will leave "once the final stages of the last operation against IS is complete," in a time frame "expected to be between 60 to 100 days."

Still, I think this can roll many directions. For example: does pulling out include ending air support? How will SDF react? There's a bunch of options, and keep in mind that last time Trump said "we're leaving Syria," upper middle management swiftly added "as soon as Iran does."

That, presumably, was Jeffrey's way of hedging against having no idea what would happen—because the policy machine is broken. Doing interviews in DC last month, I asked if people thought Trump knew his own Syria policy. The most common response was a sort of unhappy wincing face.

Some of the shock seems unmerited. Every time Jeffrey was asked if the USA will stay in Syria, he said yes, but added that Trump may still pull troops out. "Staying" would then mean talks, sanctions, etc. It may be an unorthodox way of speaking English, but it wasn't kept secret.
