Dokkodo Sounds - Where You Thought You Wanted To Be

Shinji Wakasa's "Dawn" is a conceptual ambient music album inspired by the ancient Chinese poem "The Fisherman" and the picture book "Dawn" by Uri Shulevitz, which uses this poem as its original title. In Shulevitz's picture book, a beautifully evolving world at daybreak is depicted with very beautiful colour usage and minimal words. Wakasa undertook the creation of this album to express the world of this picture book and the original poem through sound.

In producing the music for this album, Wakasa set a very simple rule for himself: to create in the early morning using the clear awareness of the morning, to play what he felt at that moment without denying the first sound, and to build the music like flowing clouds, a concept expressed in Japanese Zen as "flowing clouds and water."

This approach has successfully imbued the entire album with a sense of freedom and a gradation that transitions from the pitch-black sky gradually illuminated by the sun's light, turning from blue to green to yellow.

About the cover art:

The artwork for this album was produced by Wakasa's friend, graphic designer Shingo Kurono. The expression of light emerging like mist pushing up under an impressive ink-black sky is actually a photograph of the dawn ridge seen from his home, printed on Japanese washi paper and blurred with water. The artwork, matching the music, further liberates the world of DAWN.

zakè and dotlights met in early 2023, although both artists found that they shared affinities towards each other's works for years. Through conversations, there was one album that both artists equally cherished, ‘Stay With Me’ released in the summer of 2022 with zakè’s good friend T.R. Jordan. The album also featured a special appearance by the lovely marine eyes.

Deeply drawn by the sounds and story behind the album, dotlights commenced working with the original stems to create a very special collection of reimagined tracks with his unique lofi beatmaking and beautifully composed guitar aesthetics he’s become known for. With the assistance and this newly collaborative approach, zakè worked with both old and new stems, in addition to adding new synth production, field recordings, and tape manipulations to these remixed tracks.

dotlights is a guitarist / beatmaker from the Netherlands and a frequent contributor to Chillhop Records and Memoir Music. Working from a small home studio in a quiet town near the German border, he blends his guitar aesthetics with downtempo electronica vibes and lofi beats.

zakè (aka Zach Frizzell) is the founder and head of Indianapolis-based Past Inside the Present, which has become a standard bearer for modern ambient and experimental artistry since its creation in 2018. In addition to PITP, he runs the collaboration-focused Zakè Drone Recordings, and has released for Azure Vista Records, Dunk!Records, Polar Seas Recordings and others.

Inner Ocean Records is a platform and collective for emerging artists to release music and visual art.
