Thanks for adding these mention improvements. This response is being put on my website to see if I can pull off a webmention based reply, when the initial post isn’t a micro.blog hosted post like we talked about previously. 🤞

Congrats! 🎉 Sounds like an incredible journey with DreamHost. I know it’s always an exciting/nervous time when transitioning companies. Hope the transition goes smoothly. Will you all be moving for the new job?

That’s awesome! I totally want to do something like that but that might not be this year… maybe next year 😁
-
I watched it earlier this year. I have to say I was surprised. I definitely lost respect for McDonalds and makes it feel dirty. However, like you said, I was amazed at the original founders’ vision. I felt like it was MUCH like Chick-Fil-A, which has maintained much more of its original vision (or as much as a huge company can)

This is awesome! I have on my list the goal of enabling webmentions from my Jekyll site. I currently have a backend server that handles Micropub and rebuilds my Jekyll instance on the fly when I send a slash command from my private slack channel. My backend is Node.js using express, so I’m excited to take a closer look at what you’ve done!

Awesome! I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish that feature in my Micropub endpoint soon enough to include it as part of my newwwyear goal, but it’s definitely up there on my list!
-
👍 Eddie liked My #newwwyear goal is to make my Micropub endpoint POSSE my likes and reposts to Twitter when I like a tweet URL. Right now, Quill handles that for me, so when I "like" a tweet URL from my browser, it also gets liked on Twitter. Now that I'm using the Indigenous iOS app more, I'm missing that step so when I "like" a tweet from my phone, it doesn't actually like it on Twitter. Getting my Micropub endpoint to handle the forwarding to Twitter will solve it, and thankfully I can use https://silo.pub instead of dealing with the Twitter API.

Thanks for this great piece, Aaron! I really enjoyed reading it and it echoed a lot of my thoughts as I started implementing IndieWeb technologies into my site early this year.
It started that I had begun blogging and wanted to make sure my stuff was readable using microformats. Then I got interested in posting my microblog posts instead of twitter. Then I started tracking what I watched, what I ate, and the journey has just carried on.
The interesting thing I’ve noticed is two things: First, as you said, thoughts are much more helpful than in Twitter because you are more thoughtful about them. Second, it’s interesting how things that initially might interest you can change over time and having a website allows you to own that change in mind and adapt as you see fit!

Thanks! 😁 I’m hoping to utilize other 100 Days projects for other things that I want to self dogfood. I’m thinking about doing 100 days of listening to audiobooks after I finish this one. I’ll have to figure out how to set it up though. Audiobook chapters and books all vary in length so it might have to be something like 30 minutes of listening or something like that. Luckily I have 100 days before I have to worry about that 😁

👍 Eddie liked My project for today's IndieWebCamp Austin was initially to update my fork of Quill for posting read posts. I started by getting my fork of Quill updated. As I was working through some questions about how to include the action being taken on the book (“want to read,” “currently reading,” “finished reading,” etc.), Aaron helped me realize I was working a bit backwards and should start by publishing microformats properties that indicate the status. I updated a recent read post to include microformats property p-read-status with a value of “want-to-read.” I will continue experimenting with other values for that property. I am thinking “reading” for currently reading and “finished” for finished reading, but I don’t have any of those published yet. I also added property p-read-of on the h-cite. This causes the cited work to show up as a property of the h-entry when it’s parsed, not just as a child object. Props to Aaron for helping get me on the right track for this! Hi Cory, You talked about some of the disadvantages in using social media. You specifically listed the fact that “some people post way too much information about themselves.” This is very true and can have unintended consequences in addition to the examples you listed. For example, in an article on the guardian, several millennials describe reasons they have quit using social media. Celan Beausoleil, a social worker from California, explained that “A lot of my job is I willingly listen to people’s lives all day every day, and it started to feel so overwhelming to go on social media and see every single detail of everybody’s life” (Brait, 2016). Other reasons that millennials used for stopping use of social media was that they felt like they spent too much time on social media and that they wondered what they could enjoy if they spent that time doing something else. Another issue being that when people’s romantic relationships end, the emotional hardship is added to because they have to decide if they should change profile photos or change their relationship status. It can add a lot of baggage to a time that is already hard enough as it is (Brait, 2016). Besides that, another downfall of sharing so much information on social media is that the companies never delete your information. Which means, for better or worse, your life choices and decisions of photos, activities and notes that you choose to post are stored in their archives forever.

Please note, the post below is a school assignment that required that I write a post with a contrary view of the thread which meant I had to defend software piracy, which is something that I DO NOT support or condone. This is purely an academic exercise.
Hi Bobby, Thank you for your thoughts on software piracy. You had some interesting points both on legal and moral grounds, but there were a couple things I thought I might respond to. First, you mentioned that a Christian shouldn’t use unauthorized software because it is considered stealing and that the Ten Commandments forbid theft. This however, is under the assumption that a Christian is living under The Law rather than by grace. I would argue that a Christian is free from the law, and thus the idea of stealing software, an already abstract concept is not a sin. Second, you argue that software piracy is limiting jobs as you mention that “lowering software piracy by just 10 percentage points during the next four years would create nearly 500,000 new jobs and put $140 billion into ailing economies” (Dale & Lewis, 2016, p. 191). I would argue that plenty of businesses don’t hire more employees when they get more money and the lack of software piracy doesn’t necessarily mean there would be more jobs but just that the owners of these software companies would make more money. Considering the fact that the majority of software piracy is for over-priced software by large companies like Microsoft and Adobe, the likelihood of jobs actually being affected is fairly low. Finally, I think it is important to reflect on the fact that software is abstract. Most people that pirate software either don’t have the means to purchase it or wouldn’t purchase it, even if they didn’t pirate it. In this case, software piracy isn’t affecting anyone except it allows the person who pirates the software to be able to use something to better their life that they wouldn’t have had access to before that. Thanks for your time, Eddie

👍 Eddie liked Manton, after having heard/seen your microcasts (and those of others) as well as your mention of podcasting tools above, I thought I'd point out that there's a micropub tool called Screech for podcasts: https://martymcgui.re/2017/03/14/183924/. It may be down the road a tad for micro.blog support, but it's also something that micro.blog could do to change the microcasting space. It could also be a useful differentiator for competing services like Twitter, Mastodon, etc.

👍 Eddie liked Sad to hear, especially since you tried to use my plugins. But I will not try to convince you to come back, I know my plugins are lacking. They are just pieces of my own site I open sourced, but the way I cut them off might break things. I am actively working on two new ones at the moment, with some 'official' IndieWeb libraries, with unit testing, hopefully even with panel widgets. They should be much more stable and user friendly than the old ones. So I am not asking to come back now, but please, let me ping you when I got the new ones ready. I hope you will like those. We're a long way from general adoption, but we can make steps.
