    My first IndieWebCamp!

This past weekend was IndieWebCamp Baltimore and it was awesome! I’ve been hanging out online with those in the IndieWeb for the past year but until now I was unable to make a trip out to the IndieWebCamps that took place in 2017. Thanks to Marty and Jonathan, Baltimore hosted it’s first ever IndieWebCamp.

It’s a hosted service for authorization and token endpoints that helps bridge the technological hurdle of allowing new people to the IndieWeb to start being able to login using the IndieAuth protocol.

Spring 2018 Premieres: Grown-ish on Freeform

Well that was disappointing. I watched the premiere of Grown-ish and it lost all of the charm that it’s parent show Blackish had going for it. My wife Ashley and I have enjoyed watching Black-ish since it’s premiere a couple years ago. Going into it, my biggest hope for Grown-ish was that it would spread it’s wings and not feel bound to stay stuck within the confines of the established flow of Black-ish. Well, they accomplished that. But not in the way that I hoped. It lost everything that made Black-ish funny. The only thing that remains is the character Charlie. It was an awkward first episode and the second episode just made it worse. I’ll give it a couple more episodes but it has plummeted to the bottom of my watch list. Good luck picking yourself back out of the hole, Grown-ish.

    Software Piracy and the Christian

Before we can understand what software piracy is, it helps to think about what software is and what piracy is. According to Dale & Lewis (2016) computer software is a program “that provide the instructions that a computer executes” (pg. 3). Piracy, according to Merriam-Webster (n.d.) is “the unauthorized use of another’s production, invention, or conception especially in infringement of a copyright”. This means that software piracy is the unauthorized use of a set of computer instructions. This can apply to anything along the layers of a computing system, whether the programming layer, the operating system or individual applications. Of course, the piracy of individual applications that users don’t want to pay for is the most common use case.

    The Gospel and Marriage

The gospel radically changes the way that we approach marriage from the way the world approaches it. Through conversations, movies and music we are steeped in a culture that puts marriage rooted in selfishness. For some, the selfishness comes out through looking for "the one" that will make their life change and take away their loneliness. For others, selfishness comes out through waiting until the last possible minute to get married. For them, that means making sure they have made the major milestones in life that are important to them. Often time that includes sleeping around and possibly living with the person for years to make sure the marriage will meet the expectations that you have for the marriage. This rooted in selfish attitude is what leads to so many divorces in our culture and even in the Church. Regardless of what Christians say, the majority of marriages are completely rooted in selfishness. However, when we approach marriage through the lens of the Gospel our entire perspective on marriage changes.

    Short Reflection on Theology

For most of my life I didn’t study theology. I thought that theology was boring and too academic. I, like many Christians, felt that theology was really an enemy of the church being a relevant and effective agent for God's mission in the world. That a large portion of the church, rather than being focused on evangelizing and connecting relationally with people was overly focused on detailing specific theologies about God. A couple of years ago, I took a theology class as part of a continuing education program in the Wesleyan denomination as a pastoral student. It was that class which began to change my perspective on theology.

Only faith will put you in right standing with God

There are a lot of thoughts on righteousness and what it means to be righteous and if you are righteous or not. Every religion, and every division of religion often have different ideas on this. When the Bible talks about righteousness, it doesn't mean "good works" or "holy" or any other term that seems to denote that the person is somehow good. In fact, when the Bible talks about righteousness, the word used actually means "To be put in right relationship with God". Ultimately, being righteous isn't about having anything good about you, it just means the fractured relationship between you and God has been restored. The secret is that this relationship is only restored through faith.

I didn’t have much tooling set up for this, so it consisted of me doing a lot of manual work. I would create a blank post in Jekyll, my blog engine, which is really just a list of attributes and values, in what is called YAML. I would visit IMDB, search for the show (if it was the first time I checked into this show) and grab the ID from the URL. Then I would visit The Movie DB and grab the URL for the show, the cover image for the show and sometimes the episode image for the show. I would add all of this into my blank file and add other information like the season, episode, date, time that I watched it. It…wasn’t very fun.
