Code of the Dowse Project. You can compile it on your own platform. Documentation inside.
Build from source
Gource is a open source project that allow visualisation in real time of activity on graphs. It's been developed for git and svn repositories. We have adapted Dowse to use it to visualise the flow of information in the network. Small "agents" show activities in the network and to which server your machines (the chess-like pawns) are trying to connect to in real time.
This is just one of the many ways you can be aware of your network activity in real time using Dowse.
Dowse keeps your private network private and let you understand what is trying to talk with what.
If necessary Dowse can mute things: it can switch them off with a button, simple and clear.
Dowse is a open source project as well. Experts can look at how is done and it is built to last and to be used by anyone.
Dowse talks. In open standards: MQTT, Websockets, Open Sound Control... So many types of devices can treasure the messages that Dowse publishes. A good start for hobbyists and makers to create amazing network-aware effects and interfaces. We try to help a community of dowsers to explore this possibility.
To develop Dowse we must develop a community. In a community there are no users and developers, but adopters, thinkerers, hackers, designers and aunts, mothers, friends... There is place for everyone.
To install and configure Dowse from scratch. A tutorial to show you that is actually pretty easy.
Node-red is a easy to use tool to interect with IoT devices via the MQTT protocol.
Learn more on how you can integrate Dowse with node-red and design interesting awareness and control flows.
A short tutorial is here -->
DOWSE The Dowse box gives you back control. Dowse is free and open source software. There is no big company behind it. By installing the Dowse box you will get insight down to the network layer of what is actually going on in your home. Who is talking to whom, what, where and when? You can see which device connects to which company and you can turn that communication off, or allow it.
We call it an Awareness Box. You will be aware of the invisible world surrounding you and your famlly. To us, this is the first step. Dowse is building a community of developers who will create modules allowing you to safely and securely share your data with whomever you want. After all there are a lot of pros about getting insight into your own behavior, your family’s and your home as a companion. Yet the control should stay with you. You will share if you know what you are really sharing.
In short is a device that is designed to do well some things:
THE DOWSE WORKSHOP is a day dedicated to set up, explore and reflect on the notion of private network, shared resources, net awareness through Dowse. You will be helped by dyne.org hackers and artists to make your own box. Or you can get one immediately and work connecting your own ideas and devices to link network events with leds, sounds and other software.
You can always donate to keep the cool flow.
