Forma is a neo-grotesk typeface designed by the Italian type foundry Nebiolo from 1965–68. In 2013, I revived the typeface for Roger Black’s redesign of Hong Kong’s Tatler magazine. It was subsequently used by Robb Rice in the relaunch of WWD.
Not content to make another Helvetica clone, we worked directly from printings of Forma’s foundry type, procured and proofed by Indra Kupferschmid. With slightly rounded corners and tapered stems, this revival captures the elegance of the original design, as well as the imperfections of print that add vitality to an otherwise-sterile genre.
