    Can't install preview 4 with error "Windows 7 SP1 requires KB2952664"

    Reported by Craig Snively Aug 23, 2016 at 01:24 PM windows 6.1installVisual Studio 15 Preview 4fixed-in: vs-15-preview-5

I have downloaded the Preview 4 installer, then tried to run it. After chugging a little bit, the above dialog pops up, and the installation is halted. This KB has already been successfully installed 2 months ago. So what do I need to do.

I also get this message. Now I need to go to the IT guys and ask for special windows updates for just me? They will read this patch description and tell me there is no plan to update to windows 10 yet. Can anyone even justify the requirement?

May be it's the File in a wrong Directory: C:\Windows\System32\CompatTel ? I used that and it worked...

Don't know if it matters but this issue should have the Enterprise-15-preview-4 tag.

It seems that installer is looking for a file named "dismapi.dll". This file has to be present in either %windir%\system32 or %windir%\SysWow64 or any subdirectory.

A (dirty) workaroud is to create an empty file named dismapi.dll in any of those directories and then you can install Preview 4... :)

Creating the dismapi.dll file in SysWow64 did the trick for me.

System32 Doesn't seem to work. SysWOW64 worked. Maybe for 64 bit, you need to create it in SysWOW64

As commented Christian Zuercher (in a wrong post I guess), the file is indeed located in the

C:\Windows\System32\CompatTel directory. Installer is supposed to search in subfolders but this one has the "system" attribute, [Edit] and trusted installer as owner[/Edit] which remove that location from the results of "Directory.GetDirectories" method used by the installer..
