It’s our #smithbday: tag us, we’re 10

Posted by Anthony Leyton on October 9th, 2013

ten badge blackOn 10 October 2003, Kill Bill came out,  the Black Eyed Peas were – still – at number one with ‘Where is the Love?’ and Mr & Mrs Smith came into being. But we only care about one of those things.

That’s right: we’re 10 years old! And to celebrate, we’re giving out presents. We do realise that’s not how it normally works, but we’ve never been into doing things the conventional way.

Tomorrow (Thursday 10th October), we’re giving away 10 Get a Room! hotel gift cards, each worth £250/$400, which can be spent at any of the 900+ hotels in our global boutique hotel collection.

To win one, all you have to do is head on over to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest and share a story or a snap from your travels over the last decade. It could be a tale from your Screen Shot 2013-10-08 at 15.58.08honeymoon; a photo from one of your Smith stays, an unforgettable anecdote about your adventures abroad, a shot of an admired hotel design feature – whatever represents your favourite travel memory.

Just hashtag it #smithbday, so we can keep track. We’ll pick our favourite 10 on Friday, publish the winners right here on the Smith Travel Blog and get the gift cards in the post pronto.

So that’s 10 years and 10 gift cards on the 10th of the 10th. That should keep the conspiracy theorists busy for a while…

(We’ve also got big birthday plans for tomorrow, so watch this space…)

New for October: Smith hotels in Morocco, the Maldives and more…

Posted by Rachel Juarez-Carr on October 8th, 2013

Le Jardin des Douars hotel in EssaouiraWe’ve got something to suit every style-hungry hotel lover’s taste this month, from sleek city stays to beautiful beachy Edens. We started our travels in Morocco’s culture-rich coastal hideout, Essaouira, where we found pale and interesting riad Dar Maya and eccentric Villa de l’O in the old medina and exuberantly chic Le Jardin de Douars out among the argan groves (above) – three new Moroccan marvels to add to our carefully curated boutique hotel collection.

Six Senses Laamu hotel in the MaldivesKing & Grove Williamsburg hotel in New YorkThen we headed east to the Indian Ocean, where the tiny dots on the map that make up the Maldives gave us the tropical playground of Six Senses Laamu (right) and diver’s paradise One&Only Reethi Rai. Our adventures in Asia continued among Indonesia’s islands, where we spent our time lounging luxuriously in the seductive private villas of One Eleven Bali. Once thoroughly relaxed, we were ready to face the big city: off to Tokyo we flew, where minimalist Gate Hotel Kaminarimon awaited.

Next, the Americas beckoned. New York City’s knowingly hip King & Grove Williamsburg, with its Manhattan views and Michelin star (right), got us hooked on cool spots with skyline views, so off to the Thompson Chicago we went, where the floor-to-ceiling windows offer winning Windy City vistas.

Our final stop was a Caribbean beauty, the Viceroy Anguilla, where the British West Indies’ breezy bluffs and blue seas set the scene and Kelly Wearstler’s signature style makes the Viceroy a de rigueur stop for island-hopping sophisticates.

Pop back here next month to see our newest favourite hotels in Mauritius, Mexico, Malaysia and beyond.

South Tyrol: nature, trekking and Alpine dining

Posted by Andrew Wilson on October 7th, 2013

600-02594339South Tyrol, summer 2013. ‘Innsbruck has one of the world’s most dangerous airports to land in.’ This; the conversation piece brought up by the local woman I had the misfortune of sitting next to on my flight into Innsbruck. She went on, despite my ever-more-blanching face, to proudly explain that it is because of the mountainous landscape that acts like a wind tunnel in creating a more than troubling amount of turbulence. Pilots require special training, apparently. While this woman’s small talk was quite upsetting, the pride in her hometown was justifiable.

South TyrolInnsbruck is a small cosmopolitan town, all but lost among the Tyrolean Alps. The aerial view from my window seat displayed sundrenched meadows, Schnee-topped hillsides and thick pine forests all surrounding pretty rows of small ice-cream-coloured houses flanking an emerald-green river. This charming landscape was laid out below the snow-tipped and truly breathtaking Dolomite mountain ranges that were to be the subject of my attention for the next few days. These hills are the home to and birthplace of Swarovski Optik – the world-leading innovator of binoculars, telescopes, viewfinders, and anything else that provides you with Superman-standard vision; and we were invited to this stunning part of the world to attend the press launch for their brand-spanking-new CL Pocket.

Our press trip kicked off with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the mountain-set Swarovski Optik headquarters in Absam and an insight into the intricacies involved in mastering optic technology. Along with 15 or so journalists, editors, photographers and birders, I donned a lab coat and safety spectacles, and looked at stuff utterly incomprehensible to a civilian.

CL PocketAll I was able to make out was that the fundamental parts of a CL Pocket are aligned by means of laser mechanics to degrees of precision that require an endless amount of zeros and decimal points to express. I was forced to employ a fair amount of thoughtful chin-scratching and arm-folding, lest someone recognise me as a techno Joey Essex; and also to keep my hands from touching something that might have caused an explosion and/or mass hysteria. After a fine lunchtime spread of smoked speck, schüttelbrot and fresh fruits we each took a pair of these pocket binos for a field test with a guided tour of Innsbruck’s old quarter and the Nordkette mountains.

The old town’s a very pleasant place for a stroll. It’s dotted with fashionable boutiques, coffee shops, bistros and craft stores, and is full of attractive architecture and equally attractive people. Come the winter months, these cobblestone lanes are a bustle of musicians, artisanal food vendors, stylish tourists and fresh-faced locals, all basking in the fun-time atmosphere of one of the best skiing destinations in Europe. Why this place has such pull with so many slope-seeking holidaymakers became abundantly clear after we took the cable car to the top of the Nordkette (2,269m). From foreground to horizon the landscape was stiff with valleys, gorges and cliffs of such abrupt angles that the area couldn’t help but provide ample entertainment to even the most seasoned of adventure-hunters. And it proved to serve the birders well too.

South Tyrol2

As soon as we reached the summit they all scattered in search of the perfect perch from which to spot some rare breeds, and judging by all the pointing and excitable yelps they spotted a fair few. Left to my own devices I took up a solitary spot above a ravine to drink in the views. With a wide and meaningful stance I took deep drawn-out breaths and stared pensively into the middle distance, fully committing to a ‘I-definitely-look-like-Sir-Edmund-Hillary’ fantasy. Just then a chamois skipped across a scree slope ahead and immediately broke me out of the fantasy as I hopped around pointing and yelping. No one else was within earshot – which might have been a good thing, to go by the look the goat-antelope was giving me – so I just carried on pointing and yelping till it had enough and wandered off. It dawned on me that in an area with some 8,000 miles of walking trails and incredible wildlife waiting around every panorama-unveiling corner, South Tyrol is an extraordinarily varied landscape that offers just as much excitement for a summer break as it does for a winter getaway.

South Tyrol4Back down on more stable ground we were then taken for a lesson in true Tyrolean gastronomy with a tremendous dinner at the Michelin-starred Wirtshaus Schöneck. With South Tyrol spreading itself across the Austrian-Italian backcountry, it’s a region rich in culinary influences from both sides of the border, and it harbours many a restaurant offering the best in fusion fare as well as the hearty traditional grub that’s so lauded locally. You can expect to tuck into belly-warming plates full of things like Riesling asparagus risotto with morels and sugar carrots or encrusted back and braised cheek of bullock with mixed summer vegetables and au gratin potatoes – all of which will have likely been plucked and procured from the region. We were certainly not disappointed with the offerings at Wirtshaus Schöneck – the proof was in the pudding; and the main; and the starter; and all those little courses you get before the starter. There was a lot of food. It was fortunate each dish tasted like it was made by Cordon-Bleu-trained angels. That night’s sleep was less of a snoozy slumber and more of a brief beef-consommé coma. [A side note on food and the ski area of Alta Badia in the Italian Dolomites: here South Tyrol’s love for local food is celebrated with A Taste for Skiing which offers skiers and boarders top-quality, Michelin-quality aperitifs right there on the slopes. This year, you can pick up a Slope Food Card for €30 and benefit from discounts at many of the Slope Food huts.]

Back to Habicht, the mountain that was our rendezvous for the next morning for a nature-watch tour through the Pinnis Valley. (Yes, Pinnis.) After fuelling up on coffee and cake, naturally, and packing our lunch boxes full with delicious Bergkäse cheese, home-baked biscuits, scrumptious Tiroler Graukäse cheese, all kinds of ham and also more cheese at the idyllic Karalm Alpine lodge and followed our guide and local huntsman, Karl, on a snaking trail among wildflower-blanketed fields, snow-smoothed banks and pink-hued Alpine rose bushes as he regaled the gang with hunting tales.

South Tyrol3

We stopped for lunch at nearly 8,000 feet and watched a cluster of ibex and chamois skitter across the mountainside opposite. From here we could see rare ranges of distance, where a bright blue sky, brushed with wisps of cotton cloud, spread itself out across the face of the wide and spacious surrounds. It felt like I was in the midst of a rare and especially South Tyrolean experience that couldn’t have been better punctuated than with an evening of traditional folk music, Speckknödel dumplings, yet more cheese and twice my fair share of cream-covered apple strudel.

So, you now know where I’ll be recommending you go every winter (perhaps at one of Smith’s favourite Alpine boltholes). And the ultimate travel accessory to take. Dangerous airport or not.

To keep those view memories alive, upload your most special Pocket Places to the CL Pocket Journal.

e4fa547As you know, we love rapping with you about what you like in hotels. So, we hosted a tweet-up to get you spilling your thoughts while you still have time to vote in the first Smith Hotel Awards.

9 October 2013: the final deadline for  your votes to have been cast. So we wanted to find out what you love in a Smith hotel and what makes your stays that little bit special as the cut-off looms? Sharing tips is what we’re all about, and so many of you answered our questions last #TravelTuesday that we didn’t want anyone missing out on your wisdom. Here Helena Rawlinson helps round up your  suggestions and spills your  experiences…

Q: We love a well-dressed hotel. So what do you think gives a hotel swagger?

  • Laura House @goodhouseguest: ‘Gallery-worthy art, cosy bar, drifts of fab bed linens, natural bath potions, breakfast worth leaving bed for’.San Giorgio Hotel Mykonos, stereosis photography
  • Nicola, travel blogger @jetlagandmayhem thinks ‘top notch products in the bathroom!’ are vital.
  • Tara Cannon  @pintsizedpilot, says a hotel needs ‘a luxurious common area, signature cocktails, a nod to all things local.’
  • Nicole Gordon @NicoleGordon91 a luxury travel PR, has only one answer, Song Saa Resort which uses disused oil drums and old fishing boats to create a stylish yet sustainable five-star resort. Maybe they are a strong contender for our Eco Award?

Next up we went back to our roots: Mr & Mrs Smith came about from us looking for romantic getaways, so it’s only right that we asked:

September Pictures

Q: Sexiest Bedroom. Discuss. What makes a boudoir seductive? Which hotels have got it going ON?

  • September Pictures @Septemberpics offered up the more traditional approach of The Rookery, if you like gold cherubs with whips?

Two themes dominated: amazing views help you not to feel guilty staying put in your room and, of course, the wow of the bed, especially the linen.

  • SantoriniOrla Keefe@OlraPRCo posted a beautiful photo for us to lust over from her romantic getaway to Grace Santorini – does it get any better?

Smith hotels are special not only due to their interiors and location, but from the hearts that they have and the stars that run them.

Q: Awesome service: where, when, how have hotels really gone Above and Beyond for you?

  • Mason Rose, @MasonRose, is impressed when you can take  canine friends to a hotel (see our Smith list of  hotels where pets are welcome). The Dylan Hotel in Amsterdam is recommended  for offering bikes and also a boat for canal trips…
  • Cherie City, a travel blogger, @cheriecity had incredible service at Hotel Icon in Hong Kong. Staff are so helpful and went the extra mile when for her tight itinerary. We love that in a hotel, such as at Hotel Continentale in Florence, Train tickets? Last-minute dinner rez? Nothing is too much to ask.
  • A big shout out also went to our hotels run by real-life Mr & Mrs Smiths – ones like Weeke Barton we mean you. Lisa Allardice @LisaAllardice chipped in: ‘and you sort of just want to BE the couple who run Fazenda Nova – if only you were cool enough.’

This one really had our mouth’s watering and a flurry of people tweeting in about those memorable meals at Smith Hotels, must’ve been those afternoon hunger pangs…

Q: So many palate-teasing hotel restaurants and come-hither hotel bars. (So little time.) Which are most worth toasting?

  • Despite it being World Vegetarian Day, Zoe Butt @ZoePRCo, recommended the delicious rump of Cotswold Lamb at Cowley Manor, which she claims cannot be beaten.

ZTH Scotch Eggs

  • Other suggestions included in Barcelona from Carrie @carrie_loves_, freshly caught fish from the Sunset Beach restaurant in the Hamptons – sounds delicious!
  • Sophie Dening @SophieDening, judge in this category, agreed Paris has good hotel restaurants but also celebrated Viajante and Corner Room at Town Hall hotel and the Zetter…
  • Elizabeth Rhodes @Dustywho: ‘Definitely 21212 in Edinburgh – mmmmmmm!’

We should’ve organised some biscuits to hand for this tweet-up…

We’re not just about stylish romantic stays: with Smith & Family we champion family hotels.

Q: Which are the best family-friendly hotels and why?smithandfamily on Instagram

  • We’ve just launched Le Lodge Kerisper in Brittany which has great sandy beaches and Smith & Family bike rides so @TamaraLohan can’t wait for people to try that out.
  • For those, like Tara Cannon, who like some couple time when with the family, you’ll fall in love with the personalised nanny for each of your children at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Fiji.

Staying on top of new hotels is a fun task, and we try and make sure we know what’s going on.

Q: Which new hotels have had you excited and why? Have you voted for the best newcomers?

  • The Ampersand in London has caught many people’s attention, great V&A-themed cocktails and different themed rooms based on London landmarks.
  • New York wordsmith, Kate Thorman @katethorman, can barely contain her excitement about Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland Canada, which looks as though it’s on the end of the earth – what a view (pictured below). And ditto the High Line hotel in Meatpacking District.
  • Lucy Fenning  @JuicyLoop‘s favourite in the last 12 months is The Siam in Bangkok which not only has amazing art deco-detailed interiors but also is right by the river.

fogo

Thanks for sharing, guys, we’d love to try out all these suggestions. There are a LOT of mind-bogglingly great boutique hotels out there; vote before 9 October and you can be in with a chance of winning a five-night stay at the Best Smith Hotel in the world.

Find out all the official #SmithAwards winners as they are announced on Twitter live from our event on 7 November 2013.

Viceroy Maldives, Maldives: hotel of the week

Posted by Sarah Jappy on October 4th, 2013

If it’s possible to be too romantic, too seductive and just too beautiful, then Viceroy Maldives is guilty as charged. Coax yourself away from languidly lying upon the pure white sand to submerge yourself in a realm of underwater thrills – the only thing you need worry about is what colour best shows off your tan.

Viceroy Maldives, Maldives, Mr & Mrs Smith

Style Pristine perfection
Setting Paradise found

Viceroy Maldives, Maldives, Mr & Mrs SmithWhy this week? Serene all year-round with a deliciously tropical climate, there’s never really a ‘bad’ time to escape to the Maldives. Then again, there’s never been a better time to go, as we’ve sweet-talked our friends at the hotel into offering Smith members an amazing Viceroy Maldives hotel offer: a whopping 45 per cent off, plus 25 per cent off in the spa. Start planning your spa treatments immediately…
Viceroy Maldives, Maldives, Mr & Mrs Smith

Our favourite bits… Proudly boasting one of the world’s premier diving destinations, Viceroy has its own diving center with lessons for timid beginners and experienced old-hands. The ocean is brimming with marine life and many of the dive sites remain untouched and untainted by tourists. Or, if something closer to home is more your pace, each villa has a private plunge pool and Viceroy’s infinity pool is conveniently nestled close to the resort’s gourmet restaurants. For a view plucked right off a postcard, nestle yourself in the cushions of the Treehouse and sip some pre- or post-dinner drinks.

Viceroy Maldives, Maldives, Mr & Mrs Smith

Mr & Mrs Smith say… ‘If you’re a normal human being craving the best things the earth has to offer – the bluest waters, the whitest sands, the freshest, most delicious seafood and the most gluggable wine – you’ll fit right in here. Making you feel even more at home are the excellent staff, who do all the normal hospitable things and then some: crave a sorbet or a fruity drink? One will appear. Want a private sunset dinner on the beach, with music and candlelight? Whisper in their ear. We have nothing bad to say about this hotel: it’s heaven…’*

Casa Morada, Florida: hotel of the week

Posted by Laura House on September 27th, 2013

We’re craving an escape that feels authentically off the grid. Oh, unlimited sunshine, sand between our toes and a private island locale would help set the scene, too. Lucky for us, Casa Morada, in Southern Florida, ticks all of those boxes… and then some. Set in the mellow Florida Keys, this boutique hotel hideout is a 90-mile, head-clearing drive from Miami and the ideal spot away from daily distractions to lose (or find) yourself…

Casa Morada, Florida Keys | Mr & Mrs Smith boutique hotels

Style Minimalist bayside beauty
Setting Palm-shaded strip of Islamorada

Why this week? Curious about what it might be like to have an island all to yourself? There is a lull in the Florida Keys this time of year, making this private island seem even more secluded – especially during the week. And, right now you can save 15 per cent off room rates for mid-week stays through October. Casa Morada, Florida Keys, Mr & Mrs Smith boutique hotels

Our favourite bits… Lush landscaping and minimalist design makes this intimate, 16-suite boutique bolthole on the bay an antidote to the kitsch of the Keys. Rock the days away from one of the hammocks hung between the swaying palm trees surrounding the pool. Gaze out at the glittering Gulf of Mexico from your yoga mat each morning…your sunlounger in the sand…or right from your sprawling suite just a saunter from the shore. What grid?

Mr & Mrs Smith say…‘Like the orchids that grow in the wild Everglades, Casa Morada is a special find among its surroundings. Except in this case, that find is a serene adults-only haven in a busy tourist destination known for fried fish and family-Casa Morada, Florida Keys, Mr & Mrs Smith boutique hotelsfriendliness. Each bedroom is decorated with Mexican antiques, simple furniture and crisp linens, with large windows out, and a private terrace, many of which are set by the sea. Fittingly, there are also orchids in the room. Perhaps they’re meant as a reminder of just how rare and special Casa Morada is.’ Read the full Casa Morada review…

Postcard from Chicago: Lake Michigan

Posted by Kate Thorman on September 25th, 2013

If you’re devoting your entire Chicago visit to museum-going, eating and shopping, then you’re missing out on one of the city’s hotspots: Lake Michigan.

Lake Michigan, Chicago | Mr & Mrs Smith

Don’t be deceived by the bright blue waters and happy swimmers – this is no tropical Caribbean island. Chicago’s long shoreline surprises visitors, but locals and savvy travellers know how to make the most of Lake Michigan.

The city has 26 miles of public beaches, all open year-round and each with its own character. We especially love Oak Street Beach, and not just because it’s a couple blocks from both Public Chicago and The James Chicago; this sprawling expanse of sand next to the Gold Coast neighbourhood has events and food while the warm weather lasts, and always makes for a fun, only-in-Chicago picnic spot. And, just this summer, the city announced free WiFi at five beaches – including Montrose and North Avenue – with more to be added next summer.

No matter what time of year you’re there, you’ll find the 18-mile Lakefront Trail busy with cyclists, runners, roller bladers and sun-seekers. Get a full cross-section of the city by borrowing bikes from your hotel and cycling from end to end. Stop at shady spots like Promontory Point Park, pictured above, for a swim or a picnic.

And everyone knows that the best views are always from the water, so take in Chicago’s signature skyline and diverse architecture from the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s river cruise. Held daily mid-April through mid-November, the 90-minute tours are led by docents from the Architecture Foundation, so you’re definitely getting more than your average boat ride.

Has your Chicago wanderlust been sparked? Check out our full collection of Chicago hotels to find the right one for your stay.

Top five Eurostar hotels: autumn weekend breaks

Posted by Rachel Juarez-Carr on September 24th, 2013

Fancy skipping town without spending half a day at an airport? Jump on the train for an autumn weekend break instead: we know some enticing Eurostar stays just a hop, a skip and a train ride away from the UK. Eco-friendly ‘traincations’ (sorry) are easier, quicker and – seeing as there’s no weight limit for luggage – you can stock up on extra souvenirs. You can even take your wine/cognac/full-size French beauty products through security… pre-Christmas shopping tip to Paris, anyone?

BEST FOR ART LOVERS: LE ROYAL MONCEAU

Artist Kate MccGwire, coming to Eurostar hotel Le Royal Monceau hotel in Paris

From October 3 to November 3, Le Royal Monceau in Paris will be home to a monumental art installation from Royal College of Art graduate Kate MccGwire. MccGwire’s work (above), which appears at the hotel’s Art District Gallery as part of the FIAC Art Fair 2013, promises to include mysterious and magical animal-like forms; the artist has been fashioning her own fairy-tale-esque hybrid creatures since 2008, attracting a suitably wowed following. The Starck-designed hotel, a Raffles outpost in Paris, has an art-book shop and a dedicated art concierge, as well as decadent, modern decor: when it comes to where to sleep, we’re big fans of the Executive Rooms.

Eurostar weekend: Odette en Ville hotel in Brussels BEST FOR A SURPRISE SEXY HIDEAWAY: ODETTE EN VILLE

If you want to sneak away for a long weekend (checking in as Mr & Mrs Smith, of course), Paris is the obvious choice… and who wants to be obvious? Do something different: go to Belgium. Odette en Ville in Brussels is a seductive art deco townhouse with nine secluded rooms, lashings of vintage-chic charm and a handy array of boutiques selling chocolate and lace just steps away. (And if all that inspires enough, um, Belgian kissing for you to work up an appetite, the hotel’s restaurant serves what are rumoured to be the best chips on the planet, as well as more sophisticated fare.)

Eurostar traincation: Saint James Paris hotelBEST FOR IMPRESSING YOUR DATE: SAINT JAMES PARIS

If you’re whisking someone wonderful off to the Continent for a wild weekend, where better than the theatrically glamorous Saint James Paris hotel?  It’s a trompe l’oeil, striped, leopard-print, red-velvet-covered, hot-air-balloon-adorned wonderland – the ideal place for wowing the object of your affections, no matter how hard-to-impress he or she may be. Our favourite room in the house is 204, a split-level junior suite on the first floor that overlooks the grand entrance and the grounds, and has plenty of witty details.

Eurostar weekend break: Hôtel de Nell in ParisBEST FOR FIRST-CLASS FOOD ON A BUDGET: HOTEL DE NELL

La Régalade Conservatoire at Hôtel de Nell is still a relatively new face on the City of Light’s crowded dining scene, but chef Bruno Doucet’s intimate restaurant is firm favourite with in-the-know locals. The three-course dinner menu is delightfully interesting, decadently delicious and astoundingly non-expensive; reservations are a must, of course. Book yourselves into one of the relaxingly minimalist room upstairs so you can soak in the Japanese bathtub pre-dinner and linger in the lobby bar for a cocktail late into the night.

Eurostar getaway: Hôtel Paradis

BEST FOR SOPHISTICATED SHOPPING: HOTEL PARADIS

Hôtel Paradis in Paris’ très cool 9th arrondissement is a mid-century-style fan’s whimsical dream hotel, but it won’t break the bank: once you’ve congratulated yourself for finding such a bargain design den, take the money you’ve saved and saunter out onto the nearby Grands Boulevards for top-notch present shopping to impress your friends and family come Christmas. When you arrive with suitcases empty, it’s an easy stroll from Gare du Nord (when you’re heading home laden with Ladurée macarons and other French fancies, you might prefer to take a taxi).

Does all that has you dusting off your passport? Wonderful: why not explore our full curated collection of Eurostar hotels? If you’re a GoldSmith member, book your first-class Eurostar fare through Mr & Mrs Smith for a discounted price.

Villa Armena, Tuscany: hotel of the week

Posted by Kate Weir on September 20th, 2013

This week, we’re feeling extravagant. We want silken bedsheets, fat tubes of home-made spaghetti served on silver cloches and a pool with its own shoreline – oh, and lots of Tuscan sunshine please. Thankfully, with luxury hotel Villa Armena at our service, none of the above is too much trouble. A short drive from Siena and Florence, among sunflowers and swoonsome scenery, this Tuscan stay is a country retreat with a decidedly regal air.
Luxury hotel Villa Armena
Style Baroque ’n’ roll
Setting Surveying Siena

Why this week? Up until now, the only pitter-patter of tiny feet you might hear on the terracotta-tiled floors of this beautiful boutique villa would be Franco, the friendly owners’ 40-kilo bulldog, who’s become something of a minor celebrity among former guests and locals (he’s even starred in an Italian TV commercial). However, he may Luxury hotel Tuscany Boutique hotel Italy Villa Armenahave to share some of the limelight now that the couples’ first son Leonardo has arrived and – while Franco may not be in a celebratory mood – in honour of the new bambino there’s 30 per cent off room rates throughout October.

Our favourite bits Lavish antique-laden boudoirs set in bucolic bliss, a pool shaped like a mini beach that somehow manages to be extravagant and eco friendly, more home-made artisanal fare than you’d find in a Harrod’s Christmas hamper… There’s plenty to choose from, but what impresses us most is that the pomp and swagger of the interiors works wonderfully with the simple serene beauty of the Tuscan hills. Of course, the well-stocked wine cellar isn’t half bad either.

Mr & Mrs Smith say ‘This baroque boutique beauty is finished in style. Little pockets of space are decorated with either old Italian books or modern art. Large comfy armchairs or Starck-esque stools… the choice is yours. The grounds surrounding the hotel are just as stylised. A pool, which looks a little more like a pond, is at the centre of the space, lined by the tallest trees I’ve ever seen. Truly tranquil.’ Read the full Villa Armena review…

You say ‘It’s a fabulous restoration: no expense had been spared and the attention to detail was superb. On arrival we were delighted to be upgraded to a suite which had the most amazing bathroom! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, especially Laura who seemed to be everywhere and gave helpful advice on choosing wine at dinner.’ (Michael, SilverSmith, stayed on 5 Jul 2013) Read more Villa Armena guest reviews…
