DevOps / Back-end Engineer Anywhere in UK

PeerJ is looking for a DevOps / Back-end engineer who is happy to get their hands on a production environment and get stuck in. Our application is built on the Symfony framework, with some other toys in the background to help the application along its way.

We’re looking for someone who can work on our DevOps side and build on our current back-end services to improve performance, security, features and integrations and the way it talks to the front-end Symfony framework.

You’ll definitely have the ability to liaise with other team members in order to establish requirements, you’re able to work autonomously and along side other team members to build new features and solve problems, and you’ll understand what a production system is and what to do and not do on it.

Mandatory Skills & Experience

• Configuration Management Experience (Puppet / Ansible)
• Confident on the command line
• Bash scripting
• Knowledge and experience of using at least one RDBMS
• PHP Development
• Experience of working with a modern MVC framework
• Experience with AWS Services
• Unit testing and CI experience
• Knowledge of version control systems ideally Git

Skills that would make you stand out

• Experience in Python scripting
• Configuration Management Experience (Puppet / Ansible)
• Knowledge of Monitoring systems such as Nagios / Icinga
• Symfony Development Experience
• Performance / Load Testing of Applications
• Experience of securing systems

Front-end Developer Anywhere in UK

PeerJ is growing and needs help with the front-end in optimising for cross-browser performance (down to IE8), accessibility, javascript/ajax calls to the backend, CSS, HTML5, Microdata, schema.org ontologies, and more.

You’ll be working with editorial staff, academic users (authors, editors, reviewers and readers), our in-house user experience team, and other developers to build the industry’s best science publishing platform.

To accomplish that, you’ll be responsible for designing and building user interfaces on the Symfony platform (Twig templates, Bootstrap styles, progressive enhancement with js/jQuery) to deliver an optimised editorial workflow and a fast, delightful publishing process for users.

Mandatory Skills & Experience

• Expert-level HTML, JavaScript and CSS
• Experience building fast, accessible, responsive web pages for use on any device
• Ability to communicate with internal editorial staff during the development process
• Ideally experience with Symfony, or at least a solid background in MVC frameworks

Skills that would make you stand out

• Experience of academic research and/or publishing
• Experience building a modular library of styled components, using CSS/SCSS
• Experience with Twig
• Experience with Git (we use GitHub for managing the development process)
• Knowledge of the schema.org schemas and their implementation in HTML as microdata and/or RDFa
• Knowledge of best practices for separation of data and templates
• An eye for design. Though you’ll be working with our UX expert for user testing and requirements gathering, being able to design and implement interfaces that users love will be a big advantage

Community Manager Anywhere in UK

PeerJ is growing and needs help with engaging a global community of scientific researchers, and their institutions, so they understand the benefits of publishing with PeerJ.

We’re looking for a Community Manager to help us spread the word.

The Community Manager will help to build and manage a community of scientific researchers & key influencers to broaden the understanding and reach of PeerJ. They will also develop a program of content marketing and thought leadership to increase customer awareness, engagement and acquisition.

Mandatory Skills & Experience

• Working knowledge of social media and associated tools
• Good understanding of best practices in blogging
• Strong CMS experience; basic HTML and CSS knowledge
• Understanding of Google Analytics and other metric tools
• Strong network of contacts in the scientific research, institutional and/or publishing space
• Knowledge of relevant science and technology events
• Established social media following
• Copywriting for the web in a professional capacity
• Science communications
• A science-related degree

Skills that would make you stand out

• Proven experience of establishing rapport and support in the scientific community
• Public speaking experience and/or a thought leader in your own right
• Understanding the needs of our varied customer base and how best to reach them
• PR capability – experience of writing and coordinating the delivery of press release
