Over 12 million hectares of productive land are lost to desertification every year; the equivalent of losing an area the size of South Africa every decade. The United Nations is taking action to protect productive lands in dry regions around the world. These lands--home to two billion people--are under increasing threat due to poor land management practices and climate change. The result is poverty, drought, famine, and demographic pressures.
Images of all 175 world leaders as they signed the historic Paris Agreement on Climate Change at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon believes the next critical step is to ensure the landmark accord enters into force as soon as possible.
