Anti-corruption glossary
Access to information / Right to information
The right by law – often through freedom of information legislation (acts or laws) – to access key facts and data from the government and any public body based on the notion that citizens can obtain information which is in the possession of the state.
Why it matters
Governments and parliaments should draft and pass access to information laws that comply with international standards. Governments and civil society should proactively inform people about access to information laws and encourage their use.
