The chief data officer (CDO) position is new in the majority of companies that have one, and it has changed in scope and role since it first emerged in the marketplace. By 2019, Gartner predicts that 90% of large organizations will have hired a chief data officer; of these, only 50% will be hailed a success, due to a lack of focus on business-relevant outcome improvement. The success of a data office is highly dependent on the organizational structure that is put in place. Chief data officers and data and analytics leaders often struggle to deliver organizationwide information objectives with the small staff they have. These leaders should identify and prioritize how they design their office and staffing needs based on the business goals and priorities of the enterprise.
