Debates about business unit IT or shadow IT must include an update to the terms and themes used around spending, portfolios and innovation. To help with this, CIOs and IT leaders must create a new vocabulary to communicate about and deal with business unit IT in the digital business era.

Neither sanctioned business unit IT nor unsanctioned shadow IT is going away. To support digital business, IT service desk leaders should use business productivity teams to drive IT service desk and collaboration toward achieving targeted business results for all customers, sanctioned or otherwise.
