He is the author of "Jimmy Carter" and "The Fierce Urgency of Now: Lyndon Johnson, Congress, and the Battle for the Great Society." He also is the co-host of the podcast "Politics & Polls." The opinions expressed in this commentary are his own. (CNN)The resistance to President Trump's controversial ban on refugees is growing. What started at the grassroots level with spontaneous protests at airports and on city streets is now reaching into higher levels of government. Frustrated with a President who seems to be running roughshod over American policy, Acting Attorney General Sally Yates,

Chimps beat up, murder and then cannibalise their former tyrant

It was a gruesome scene. The body had severe wounds and was still bleeding despite having been lying for a few hours in the hot Senegalese savanna. The murder victim, a West African chimpanzee called Foudouko, had been beaten with rocks and sticks, stomped on and then cannibalised by his own community. This is one of just nine known cases where a group of chimpanzees has killed one of their own adult males, as opposed to killing a member of a neighbouring tribe. Advertisement These intragroup killings are rare, but Michael Wilson at the University of Minnesota says they are a valuable insight into chimp behaviour such as male coalition building. “Why do these coalitions sometimes succeed, but

Why people are calling the acting attorney general's firing the 'Monday Night Massacre'

On Monday evening, the White House released a statement saying acting Atty. Gen. Sally Yates had been fired for instructing Justice Department lawyers not to defend President Trump's travel ban. Yates has "betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States," the White House said . "Monday Night Massacre" was trending on Twitter within the hour. In 1973, President Nixon ordered the firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox because he wouldn't obey Nixon's order to stop looking into Watergate. Two of the Justice Department's top leaders resigned in protest rather than following Nixon's directive to fire Cox. It became known

  • An Enormous Crack Just Opened Up In The Middle Of The Arizona Desert

The Arizona Geological Survey is monitoring a 2-mile long crack that has opened up in the Arizona desert. Recent drone flights over the crack reveal that it has continued to grow both in length and width in Pinal County, to the southeast of Phoenix. Scientists are actively monitoring the crack and took drone video of the extent of the fissure as normal documentation of an area prone to large cracks in the Earth. The northern portion of the crack is older and partially filled in by eroding sediment and from collapse of the crack’s edges. Meanwhile, the southern portion remains 25 to 30 feet deep and 10 feet across. The fissure tapers out toward each edge but the southern edge continues to grow

Mom's Note to Stranger at McDonald's Who Got Involved When Her Toddler Wouldn't "Go Potty"

A stranger in a McDonald's bathroom overheard a typical fight between a mom and her toddler: the Kansas parent was trying to reason with her 3-year-old to pee before they left to get back in the car. The stranger listened in as Tiffany Miller tried to explain to her daughter that it was a long drive home and she had to use the potty before they left. She also heard the child explain that she was afraid the toilet was going to flush while she was sitting on it. Despite her mother promising to block the sensor and prevent it from flushing, the little girl wouldn't comply, and promised to make it through the drive home without having an accident. In a heartfelt thank you to this stranger posted

Trump Fires Acting Attorney General Sally Yates for Refusing to Defend Immigration Order

Lambert and Shelton called it quits in July 2015 after four years of marriage.

Hillary Clinton Exploits Trump Outrage for Personal Gain

Hillary Clinton’s disastrous foreign policy perpetuated the War on Terror, spread unrest and caused military conflict in the Middle East, and her policies were often abrasive toward immigrants and refugees. However, her record didn’t stop Clinton and her former staff from capitalizing on the outrage over Trump’s recent immigration ban that targeted seven Muslim countries. “I stand with the people gathered across the country tonight defending our values & our Constitution. This is not who we are,” Clinton tweeted on January 28, shortly after her former Press Secretary, Brian Fallon, vaguely assigned credit to the Clinton campaign for the ACLU winning a legal challenge against Trump’s ban. Though

Truck driver charged in crash that killed 4 college softball players dies by suicide | News

The report concluded that Staley's lack of attempt to take evasive actions was not a result of fatigue or reaching for the cooler, but "due to incapacitation, likely from the use of [synthetic cannabinoids]." In addition to the criminal charges, Staley and the trucking company, Quickway Transportation, had been named in three lawsuits related to the crash. Two of the cases were dismissed. The outcome of the third was not clear. North Central Texas College is a two-year junior college that was founded in 1924, according to its website. The Gainesville campus is home to about 2,500 students.

A surprising group affected by Trump's travel ban: airline crews

On Jan. 27, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order issuing a travel ban on seven predominantly-Muslim countries.
