Ceph is a open source distributed storage system that has been getting a lot of attention the last several years. This talk will be an introduction to Ceph, how it works, and some applications where it could be used to provide a scale out and reliable storage.

The exploits and security breaches which are technically feasible and the ones that actually occur in the wild are two very different things. There are two common, bad assumptions: one, that people choose random passwords and two, that passwords are broken with dumb brute force. Neither of those assumptions are correct. Brute force attacks are never used on passwords of longer than six characters because it takes too long. So instead, hackers use word list attacks that combine list of words gathered from hacked passwords, Wikipedia, the Gutenberg Project and YouTube comments and then combine those words in unique ways (https://hashcat.net/wiki/doku.php?id=oclhashcat has over 5100 rules to do this). This so-called intelligent brute force reduces the candidate key space and makes attacks possible on 55 character or longer passwords.

Tyler Johnson will be explaining the kerberos protocol and demonstrating it’s use in various environments. Kerberos is a computer network authentication protocol which works on the basis of tickets to allow nodes communicating over a non-secure network to prove their identity to one another in a secure manner. Used in many different Operating Systems and services, it is aimed at a client-server model and provides mutual authentication — both user and server verifiy each other’s identity. Kerberos builds on symmetric key cryptography and protects against eavesdropping and replay attacks.
The demonstration will mainly take place in a debian-based environment, which is recommended if you want to follow along.

GitHub is a great solution for many open-source projects, but what if it isn’t right for your project? If you need more control over your project or want to run your own systems, what are some good choices?The OpenDOF Project (https://opendof.org) found itself in that situation last year when it was formed. This talk presents the solutions that we identified and integrated in order to provide a web presence, source control, defect tracking and continuous integration. The talk will also briefly cover an open-source project that we created for large-scale automated testing.
We will share the tools chosen and costs that we incur, as well as how we deal with issues like download support at large scale.
There will be no meeting in July, because of the proximity to the OpenWest Conference. See you next month!

It is open source (MPLv2) CLI software you can use it to purchase or transfer domains and easily manage DNS, DDNS (Dynamic DNS) and MDDNS (Mirrored Dynamic DNS). He will also be demonstrating how to “purchase” a free* daplie.me subdomain in daplie-tools.

IPv6 keeps getting talked about as the future of the Internet. After all, 6 is a bigger number than 4. You may already be using IPv6 and not even know it. This presentation will do a quick refresher on some basics of IPv6. There will then be some examples and demos of how you can use IPv6.
