Haifa Center for German and European Studies (HCGES)

The Haifa Center for German and European Studies (HCGES) is a joint project of the University of Haifa and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Founded in 2007, the mission of the HCGES is to expose students, researchers and the broader community to modern Germany. In order to achieve this goal the Center engages in intensified Germany-related teaching activities and supports relevant research projects.The Center emphasizes the social, political, legal, economic and cultural develompents and tendencies in Germany since 1945.

The HCGES is an interdisciplinary center. It is anchored in the Research Authority of the University of Haifa and cooperates with the university's faculties of the humanities, social sciences, and law. The Center also supports relevant activities of other faculties and institutions at the University of Haifa.ty to modern Germany. Aims and Mission of the HCGES

TEACHING:

The HCGES coordinates teaching activities related to contemporary Germany at the University of Haifa. Courses are currently offered at the above mentioned faculties, covering a broad spectrum of topics ranging from the German civil code, through modern German literature to the relationship between politics and sports. In October 2009 the Center has started an MA Program in German and European Studies.

RESEARCH

The HCGES actively supports research in the different fields of German and European Studies. The Center grants scholarships to students (MA or doctoral levels) whose research projects are associated with contemporary Germany. Some of the research areas that have been supported by the Center include migration and integration, German policy of education and the culture of memory.

The aim of the Center is to develop original and innovative research on modern Germany and EU/Europe and to train the next generation of scholars in this field.

PUBLIC EVENTS:

The HCGES organizes events which are open to the public-at-large. Past events presented by the HCGES include panel discussions on German identity and patriotism, multiculturalism, the aftermath of the "Generation of '68" and the developments following the fall of the Berlin Wall two decades ago.
