A selection from the second chapter La grand renfermement ('The Great Confinement') of Histoire de la folie by Michel Foucault (1961) which blends together both existing English translations (privaliging Howard's earlier translation of the abridged text over Kalfa's recent one of the complete text, using the latter to fill in the gaps-- and occassionally supply the defiencies-- of the former). |

Dear all, This is to let you know that I intend to close down and archive the Foucault List. The 1000 members of the Foucault List produced more than 12,000 posts over 20 years of activity: After 9 years running the list, Im moving on to other things. A member of the Foucault-L may value this list enough to step in and recreate it somewhere else. Architexturez Network, who has been providing technical support since 2004, is available to allow for a smooth transition. |

Hi Michael Quite a bit has been done on this in relation to Butler and Althusser. Won Choi has published some stuff on this, relating their works on this to those of Lacan. His PhD thesis is available free online under ecommons. http://ecommons.luc.edu/luc_diss/297/ He has also published revised versions of chapters in Rethinking Marxism and Decalages. Pierre Macherey has also written stuff on this, translations of which have been published in the same journals. See http://scholar.oxy.edu/decalages/vol1/iss2/ |

Dear Kevin, I think that Foucault here directely transposes his analysis of what discursive or knowledge practises are doing to non-discursive or power, practices.

This is an excellent analysis Tiffany, I do agree nearly completely. But I do not agree with the way in which you summarize it. See my comments/additions IN CAPITAL below. |
Michel Foucault is the most cited author in the humanities.
Since 1998, Foucault.info has been providing free access to a large selection of texts.
