CNN Original Series Post Strong Ratings this Quarter
CNN’s ratings momentum continued this quarter, with the network ranking #2 in cable news in the first quarter Total Day in both total viewers and the demo 25-54, ahead of MSNBC by its largest quarterly lead in over eight years (since 3Q-06) among 25-54 and by more than five years (since 3Q-09) in total viewers. CNN also outperformed MSNBC this quarter in M-Su/M-F in the demo rating, and tied MSNBC in M-Su total viewers. CNN has now beat MSNBC in Total Day for the fourth straight quarter among both total viewers and the demo, in M-Su Prime for the fourth straight quarter among 25-54 and in M-F Prime for the third straight quarter in the key demo 25-54. This is the longest streak across these dayparts and demos in over six years (since 4Q-08).
CNN (and HLN) also had big ratings gains this quarter, with all four dayparts up from year-ago levels, while MSNBC posted the biggest declines in cable news. CNN’s weekday primetime programs all grew compared to a year ago and outperformed MSNBC across the 7pm, 8pm, 9pm and 10pm hours in the demo 25-54 for the third consecutive quarter; while MSNBC lost 45% of its primetime audience. CNN’s New Day topped MSNBC’s Morning Joe for the third quarter in a row; beating Joe in both total viewers and the demo rating. CNN also posted the largest increases in daytime (9a-4p) among both total viewers (+26%) and demo (+24%), while MSNBC daytime is down -56% to 42k in the demo, its lowest in nearly 17 years (since 2Q 1998; 27k). CNN Original Series had a strong ratings performance as well this quarter.
This quarter, MSNBC experienced lows in key dayparts dating back at least 10 years. In Total Day and M-F Prime, MSNBC registered its lowest quarterly levels among 25-54 (since 2Q 2005) and its lowest in total viewers (since 4Q 2007). The network posted its lowest M-Su Prime performance in 25-54 (since 2Q 2006) and lowest in total viewers (since 4Q 2007). MSNBC programming at 7p and 8p had the lowest demo delivery in nearly 10 years (since 2Q 2005) with All in with Chris Hayes, which debuted in 2Q-13, delivering its lowest ratings on record. MSNBC’s flagship program, The Rachel Maddow Show (launched in 3Q 2008) also averaged its lowest quarterly 25-54 performance on record, as did the Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell at 10pm. During weekday mornings, MSNBC’s Morning Joe is posting its lowest quarterly performance among 25-54 in over seven years (since 4Q 2007) and among P2+ in seven years (since 1Q 2008).

Washington (CNN)- U.S. troops who served alongside Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl on the day he disappeared told CNN that the emerging "whistleblower" defense being prepared for him makes no sense.
Bergdahl's lawyer is making the case that Bergdahl left his post on foot to report his unit for troubling behavior, but his fellow troops say the platoon was already scheduled to drive back to their Forward Operating Base, or FOB, just hours after his disappearance.
Then-Specialist Josh Cornelison, the platoon medic, said the base was "a lengthy drive away from" Observation Post Mest, where Bergdahl was last seen by his fellow troops.
"And he wanted to walk back? Knowing full well how many times we'd been blown up on the way there and back? Everyone knew bad dudes were around and watching us move to and from OP Mest," Cornelison said.
The U.S. Army has yet to make public the investigative report into Bergdahl's disappearance, but on March 25 Bergdahl's defense attorney, Eugene Fidell, released a letter sent to Gen. Mark Milley, the commanding general at U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg. Milley last Wednesday announced his ruling that Bergdahl would face a potential court martial for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

Studying data provided by company filings and Markit, CNNMoney’s Matt Egan highlights how few women are coming up the ranks. Too often women are sidelined into “softer skill” jobs that don’t set them up to be considered for the CEO role.
How many women are in the C-suite? Why aren't more women making it in? Is legislation needed? What will be the game changer? Explore Egan’s reporting to get the answers to these important questions and more:

Today on CNN’s State of the Union, Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, spoke to CNN’s Gloria Borger in an exclusive interview about the events shaping current domestic and global politics including the Israeli election, the Iran nuclear talks, the terror threats throughout the Middle East, and the nomination of Loretta Lynch for Attorney General.
TEXT HIGHLIGHTS
McCain on President Obama’s reaction to the Israeli election: “there was a free and fair democratic election, the only nation in the region that will have such a thing. The president should get over it. Get over your temper tantrum, Mr. President. It's time that we work together with our Israeli friends and try to stem this tide of ISIS and Iranian movement throughout the region, which is threatening the very fabric of the region. The least of your problems is what Bibi Netanyahu said during an election campaign. If every politician were held to everything they say in a political campaign, obviously, that would be a topic of long discussion. But the point is, is the J.V., as the president described them, is just moving over into Yemen. We see this horrible situation in Libya. We see ISIS everywhere in the world. We see the Iranians now backing the Shia militias in Tikrit, where they're going to - where they're going to massacre a number of Sunnis. And it is - the guy in charge is a guy named Suleimani, who - who imported - excuse me - I will catch up here - Suleimani moved thousands of copper-tipped IEDs into Iraq and killed hundreds of American soldiers and Marines. And the president of the United States is praising the mullahs and their behavior in the region.”
McCain on President Obama’s message to the Iranian people: “I wish he had spoken to the people of Iran in 2009, when they rose up against a corrupt election and he refused to speak out on their behalf while they were chanting ‘Obama, Obama, are you with us or are you with them?’ Again, does anyone - does he believe that anyone in Iran is able to speak up? Are they able to speak up for anything that the mullahs disagree with? They're either jailed or killed. Again, this is a view, a world view the president has which is totally divorced from reality.”
McCain on Loretta Lynch’s nomination and the issue of race: “My response is that you can't erase history. These same Democrats led by Senator Durbin filibustered Janice Rogers Brown, the first African-American to the seat on that court - on that court. They filibustered Miguel Estrada. This has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with trying to get legislation through which would prevent - or help prevent this horrible issue of sexual trafficking that is going on. And also I will add to that, I will not vote for her because she has said she would uphold the president's unconstitutional executive orders concerning immigration.”

HIGHLIGHTS:
Ghani on Afghanistan’s transitions: “What we need to realize is that 2014 was a year that we faced three transitions simultaneously – a political transition where authority for the first time was transferred from one elected president to another; a security transition where the combat role of the international community, particularly that of the United States, ended; and third, an economic transition. Our enemies were banking on collapse of authority. Because of that, they challenged us. But what I am gratified to share is that during the last six months, the Afghan national security forces have really shown their mettle. Now we are not in a defensive position. We have taken offensive.”
Ghani on the ISAF withdrawal: “Well the first point is that I'd like to pay tribute to the Americans – I believe 2,215 who paid the ultimate sacrifice; over 20,000 Americans that have been wounded; hundreds of thousands of Americans, men and women, who've seen combat in Afghanistan. They’ve gotten to know our valleys, our desserts, our mountains. They have stood shoulder to shoulder with us. The result is that America has been secure, thank God. There's been no terrorist attack on mainland United States. We have been the front line. Meanwhile, what needs to be underlined is while tragedy brought us together, there are common interests that now can be articulated very clearly. The threats that we are facing on a daily basis, were they, God forbid, to overwhelm us, will threaten the world at large.”

World Premiere at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival
The Wagner/Cuban Company's Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired North American rights to STEVE JOBS: THE MAN IN THE MACHINE, a new documentary directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney. A CNN Films and Jigsaw production, STEVE JOBS: THE MAN IN THE MACHINE had its world premiere at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival.
“I am delighted to partner with Magnolia on this film,” said director Alex Gibney. “Given our long history together, I look forward to premiering THE MAN IN THE MACHINE to audiences looking for a greater understanding of the celebrated tech icon.”
In STEVE JOBS: THE MAN IN THE MACHINE, Gibney presents a critical examination of Jobs, revered both as an iconoclastic genius and denounced as a barbed-tongued tyrant. The film is a candid telling of the Apple legend through interviews with a handful of those close to Jobs at different stages in his life. The film is an evocative portrait of his legacy, and our relationship with the computer. It unravels the larger than life myth he so deliberately crafted, and examines the endurance of his values which continue to shape the culture of Silicon Valley to this day.
“Once again Alex Gibney takes on an iconic figure and masterfully reveals the complexities and motivations behind the Steve Jobs facade that has inspired the world,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles.
Magnolia Pictures has acquired the theatrical, VOD and home entertainment rights and CNN Films has the television broadcast distribution rights.
“Alex Gibney paints an honest portrait of one of the most revered and complex men in history allowing us a provocative look at the visionary life of Steve Jobs,” said CNN Films’ Vinnie Malhotra. “We are thrilled to partner with Magnolia Pictures again and look forward to sharing Alex’s extraordinary film with audiences, across all platforms.”
STEVE JOBS: THE MAN IN THE MACHINE was produced by Viva Van Loock and Alex Gibney. It was executive produced for CNN Films by Vinnie Malhotra and Amy Entelis, and for Jigsaw by Stacey Offman and Gaby Darbyshire. This is the seventh film directed by Gibney to be distributed by Magnolia.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia SVP of Acquisitions Dori Begley with Josh Braun of Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers.
