During 1968, the Tet Offensive, the Kennedy/McCarthy battle for the Democratic presidential nomination, the assassinations of MLK and RFK, violent student protests around the world, a chaotic Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the Soviet incursion into Prague, and President Johnson’s decision to not run for re-election were pivotal turning points – all ushered in some of the most fundamental social and political changes in American history. Robert Kennedy, Jr., Dan Rather, Evan Thomas, Robert Dallek, Jeff Greenfield, Walter Isaacson, Taylor Branch, Tom Hayden, Mark Kurlansky, Leonard Steinhorn, Todd Gitlin, and others describe one of the most dramatic years in American history.

- CNN ranked #2 in Total Day among total viewers (404k vs. MSNBC’s 319k) and in the key demo 25-54 rating (125k vs. MSNBC’s 92k).
- CNN ranked #2 in M-Su Primetime among 25-54 (166k vs. MSNBC’s 154k).
- CNN ranked #2 in M-F Primetime in the key demo 25-54 (168k vs. MSNBC’s 149k).
- CNN ranked #2 in Dayside (9a-4p), posting a 90% advantage over MSNBC in total viewers (446k vs. 235k) and 120% more in the demo (108k vs 49k).
This month, MSNBC slipped to 4th place in Total Day (92k) and Dayside (49k) and to third in M-F prime (149k) and M-Su prime (154k) in the key demo 25-54. MSNBC’s flagship program The Rachel Maddow Show posted its second lowest month ever in the demo rating (181k), the lowest ever was last month (178k). MSNBC’s dayside performance represents the network’s second lowest monthly delivery since October, 1999. Fox News ranked #3 this month in Weekend Prime posting 150k in the key demo 25-54. All the cable news networks were down in total day this month vs. last year due to heightened viewing from the Zimmermann trial verdict among other stories.

- CNN’s newest Original Series has delivered strong ratings so far this month. Over its first three Sunday 9pm premieres, The Hunt is #1 in its time period in both total viewers and the demo 25-54.
- The program averaged 917k among total viewers and 298k in the key demo easily ahead of Fox News (765k/133k) and MSNBC (340k/174k).
- The show is up +65% among 25-54 vs. the prior to launch four Sundays and +67% for total viewers in the same time period.
The Sixties (launch to date 5/29/14-7/27/14)
- Over its seven Thursday 9pm premieres, The Sixties is averaging 291k among 25-54 and 1,073k in total viewers.
- The program ranks #2 among cable news in the time period in both 25-54 rating and total viewers, topping MSNBC (149k/768k).
- The Sixties is ranking above the prior-to-launch Thursday time period average by +197% among 25-54 (98k) and +216% in total viewers (340k).
Middle-East/Malaysia Flight 17:
- Since the Israel-Gaza conflict and the Malaysia Flight 17 story began on Thursday, July 17th, CNN has averaged 168k in total day and 224k in 8p-11p prime among 25-54.
- CNN has posted the strongest growth in both dayparts of any cable news network versus the prior four weeks, increasing by +70% in total day (99k) and +53% in prime (146k) among 25-54.
Data is a blend of Nielsen Live+SD and the more inclusive Live+3 and final Live+7 data when available.

Fmr. Sec. Hillary Clinton to Fareed Zakaria: Putin indirectly responsible for MH17
CNN’s FAREED ZAKARIA GPS featured an interview with Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Clinton spoke with Fareed about the Russian Reset, the United States’ relationship with Vladimir Putin, and the crisis between Israel and the Palestinians in the Middle East.

Clinton on Putin’s Character:
CLINTON: Well, he's very tough. He's a very, um, arrogant, uh, person to deal with, um, which I think is a combination of this vision of Russia and some fundamental insecurity, uh, because when you are dealing with him, he often acts as though he could care less. Uh, he's not interested. Even talking with him about getting Russia into the World Trade Organization, which is something the Obama administration was determined to do because we want to have a rules-based order...
ZAKARIA: Right.
CLINTON: - insofar as possible, um, proved difficult to deal with him. You know, he acts, you know, bored and dismissive. So he has a lot of personas that he pulls out if he wants to stare intently at you with his very, you know, bright blue eyes, because he wants something from you or he wants to convey a message to you, he can turn on the charm. But he can also be, you know, very tough to deal with and act as though it's a burden on him to be in conversations with other world leaders.
Clinton on Putin’s Involvement in MH17:
First, I think if there were any doubt, it should be gone by now, that Vladimir Putin, certainly indirectly, through his support of the insurgents in Eastern Ukraine and the supply of advanced weapons and, frankly, the presence of Russian special forces and intelligence agents bears responsibility for what happened to, uh, the shoot down of the airline.
