Around The State
Posted 04/06/18 - from www.businessreport.com

Later this year the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether sports betting can expand to states other than Nevada. The state of Mississippi is already gearing up and laws are ready to be enacted there if the Supreme Court rules that sports betting can expand. Some senators and representatives in Louisiana's legislature are also looking to take advantage of a positive outcome. While Representative Major Thibaut's proposed bill to create sports betting at certain off tracking betting facilities in the state did not clear a house committee yesterday, Metairie Senator Danny Martiny's bill which would allow off track betting at riverboat casinos, video poker houses, and the land based casino in New Orleans is still alive.   Read the article at www.businessreport.com.

Have you every asked yourself the question, “What makes a good audience?” Is it a packed house? Perhaps. Is it a comfortable, intimate venue? Perhaps. Is it an enthusiastic group of patrons of any number and age? Perhaps. No matter how you define “a good audience”, there’s no doubt that those in the audience for the recent performance of Quiana Lynell and her extraordinarily talented instrumental musicians were an enthusiastic, engaged audience.

Quiana Lynell performed at the Poydras Center for the Arts Council of Pointe Coupee’s second performance in their 2018 Performing Arts Series on Saturday, March 24. She was “backed up” by three talented young musicians who joined her vocals on the piano, electronic keyboard, bass and drums.

Quiana reached out to the audience with her strong vocals of blues and jazz selections. Many of her songs were original songs that she has composed. Among them was “Baton Rouge”, a song she wrote and performed after the August 2016 floods. Quiana’s dreams of becoming an international jazz vocalist have been realized through receiving the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocalist of the Year. Her performance plans for the near future include traveling to Prague to perform. Quiana shares her musical talent with symphony and jazz orchestras, as well as solo performances. (MORE)

Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards and U.S. Rep. Garret Graves announced that the federal government will allocate an additional $1.213 billion in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for hazard mitigation projects in parishes that were impacted by the 2016 floods.

“This new investment from HUD is critically important to our rebuilding efforts. It will allow us to make investments in flood risk reduction and infrastructure projects in areas of our state that were devastated by the 2016 floods, including partnering with the Army Corps of Engineers to make investments in large-scale projects such as the Comite River Diversion Canal. Once we have the full details from the federal government regarding how these funds can be spent, we will work with stakeholders and local governments to determine what projects to fund and outline our plan to HUD. I appreciate the congressional delegation’s continued efforts on our flood recovery, and I am confident these resources will be used to strengthen our communities against future disasters,” said Governor Edwards.
