The Directors Guild Award nominations are a good indicator to who will get that same recognition at the Oscars.

The three favourites this year: La La Land, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight are continuing their streak by landing these coveted nominations. Arrival and Lion have basically secured themselves in the race now that they've been recognized by the DGA. While there's no guarantee we'll see the exact same five directors get this nomination from the Academy, it's a sure thing for a Best Picture nomination for all of these films at this rate.

It'd be a complete shock if Damien ChazelleKenneth Lonergan, or Barry Jenkins somehow missed the director nomination, as those three appear to be totally locked. »

Ben Affleck's directorial efforts ranked

It has been widely accepted that Hollywood star and actor Ben Affleck is surprisingly a really good director. So much so that we'd say he's even better behind the camera than in front of it, though he does tend to take roles in the films that he helms.

This week, Affleck directs and stars in a new film called Live By Night. Adapted from the Dennis Lehane novel (the author also wrote the books behind Shutter Island and another Affleck project, Gone Baby Gone), Live By Night is a crime story that takes place during the Prohibition Era.

With Affleck directing, we have good expectations for Live By Night, and it has got us thinking about his past directorial work. While we patiently wait for Affleck to direct the next Batman film, a »

Annette Bening's Oscar Nominated Roles

Annette Bening's Oscar Nominated RolesAnnette Bening's Oscar Nominated RolesAdriana Floridia1/12/2017 10:14:00 Am

Annette Bening is one of our greatest working actors, and the Academy has surely recognized that. She's been nominated for four Oscars, three for Best Actress in a Leading Role and one for her supporting work in 1990's The Grifters. Despite these accolades, she has yet to take home the gold.

This year, she is again an Oscar front-runner for her performance in Mike Mills' 20th Century Women. Another semi-autobiographical film from the director (his 2011 feature Beginners was based on his real experiences with his father, and Christopher Plummer won the Oscar for his portrayal), this time Mills is paying tribute to his mom. Annette is filling big shoes, playing a character inspired by the director's mother, and Mills' has even said that Annette in a sense is like his mom now, as he has »

Back in the day, Warner Bros. was known for making tough crime movies and the roster of stars — Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, George Raft — who headlined them.

Things have changed a lot in Hollywood since the old contract-player days. However, if there’s any talent who’s identified with a particular studio at the moment, it’s Ben Affleck.

The square-jawed, 44-year-old Bostonian produced, directed and starred in Warner Bros.’ last Best Picture Oscar winner, Argo. He’s also made The Town and The Accountant for the company in the past few years. And Affleck not only plays the most important character, Batman/Bruce Wayne, in Warner’s latest round of DC Comics-based movies, »

Mike Mills is a director with a penchant for autobiographical stories.

His last film, Beginners, was partially based on his experience with his father (played by Christopher Plummer in an Oscar winning performance), when he came out at the age of seventy-five. This time with 20th Century Women, we're getting insight into Mills' relationship with his mother, played by Annette Bening, who also is a strong Oscar contender for this awards season.

Taking place in the late 1970s, 20th Century Women follows Dorothea (Bening) as she recruits two younger, strong women (played by  Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning) to help her raise her son. The cast is rounded out with Billy Crudup and Lucas Jade Zumann.

Monday January 16th has been deemed Blue Monday.

Blue Monday is what experts would call “the most depressing day of the year”, and it makes sense. It’s freezing cold outside, it’s mid-January when the excitement of the holidays has officially faded, and it’s a Monday.

We at Cineplex want to turn this day around, and instead are giving you the opportunity to make the most depressing day into a great one. Scene is offering a special redemption promotion on January 16th, which will make your Monday anything but blue.

On Blue Monday, Scene members can treat themselves to a movie by redeeming half the amount of points – 500 points for regular movies, 750 points for enhanced experiences and 1,000 for VIP Cinemas. »

Deadpool, Hidden Figures and Hacksaw Ridge land coveted PGA nominations

Deadpool, Hidden Figures and Hacksaw Ridge land coveted PGA nominationsDeadpool, Hidden Figures and Hacksaw Ridge land coveted PGA nominationsAdriana Floridia1/10/2017 1:23:00 Pm

The Producers Guild Awards are an incredibly important pre-cursor to the Oscars.

Today's announcement means there's a chance for a few underdog films to get that prestigious Best Picture nomination, and the most surprising of the bunch is Deadpool. Deadpool has been picking up a lot of awards steam lately, between this and its Writers Guild Award nomination. A Best Picture Oscar nomination would be unprecedented, as superhero films, let alone R-Rated comedic ones, have never been awards contenders. It's exciting to consider that the awards conversation can shift to more mainstream films, because if you ask the majority of audiences, a lot of them would call Deadpool one of their favourite films of the year.

Also among the nominations are the same movies we've been hearing about all through awards season, »

Arrival and La La Land lead the 2017 BAFTA nominations

The BAFTAs are the British equivalent of the Oscars, and although the awards are given overseas, they still factor into the American awards race.

Yet again, we see the same three films having a strong presence here: La La Land, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. However, BAFTA is also spreading the love to other awards favourites like Arrival, Nocturnal Animals, and Lion.

Some interesting omissions here include Denzel Washington for Fences. His co-star Viola Davis is nominated in the supporting category, but it looks as though BAFTA went for other potential Oscar contenders Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge and Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic. They're also the first major awards body to nominate Jake Gyllenhaal's leading performance in Nocturnal Animals.

You know it's a good time of year when Pixar is teasing new movies. With the upcoming Cars 3, Pixar has taken a slightly darker approach but we are totally loving it.

Lightning McQueen has endured the biggest car wreck of his life and a new generation of racers are leaving him in their dust. But with a little help from trainer and racing technician Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo), McQueen sets out to prove #95 is still the best there ever was, and the best there ever will be.

It will be Pixar's biggest showdown when Lightning McQueen races newcomer and top dog Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) on Piston Cup's grandest stage.

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen may be adversaries in the X-Men films but they are best friends in real life.

The pair met while working at Stratford-upon-Avon’s Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1970s. McKellen remembers they eyed each other from afar, but adds, “we didn’t become close friends until much later.”

“I probably could have attempted a friendship but I was so intimidated by my friend at that time,” Stewart says playfully. “That’s all gone now.”

The two bring their personal chemistry to a West End remounting of their 2013 Broadway hit, Harold Pinter’s No Man's Land that will be broadcast live to Cineplex cinemas from Wyndham’s Theatre, London.

Quiz: From Patriots Day to Titanic, how many movies based on true events do you know?

Quiz: From Patriots Day to Titanic, how many movies based on true events do you know?Quiz: From Patriots Day to Titanic, how many movies based on true events do you know?Garrett McCormick1/9/2017 3:17:00 Pm

Movies based on true stories can be a tricky thing. Will the filmmakers get it right? Was the right person cast for the movie? How accurate is the film?

People have such high expectations for movies based on true events because they might know the event like the back of their hand, they have a preconceived idea of how the movie should be, and they might already have an emotional attachment to the story – so the pressure on the director and actors is huge!

But not all movies based on true events is actually what happened in real life. Let’s use Titanic for example; the ship and disaster was real, but unfortunately »

The Golden Globe Awards are known as Hollywood's biggest party.

While it is of course an honour to win a Golden Globe, they have very little impact on the Oscars, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who votes on the awards are often known to make some interesting decisions when giving out their trophies. It's also a total Hollywood love-fest, where stars of TV and movies are getting drunk and hanging out, and we wish more than anything that we could be there. But since our invite was lost in the mail, we could at least watch from afar and enjoy everything that makes this an unforgettable night! We're breaking down the highlights and surprises from the event--from the actual awards, to the ceremony itself.
