A man was shot outside the White House by the Secret Service when he brandished a weapon at a checkpoint on 17th and E Streets. Visitors wrote on Twitter that they saw 'lots of people with guns' after shots were heard. President Obama was not in the White House at the time, because he was out playing a round of golf at Andrews Air Force Base. Vice President Joe Biden was however in the building and was rushed to a secure area. The suspect, who was shot in the abdomen, was taken to hospital in critical condition. Secret Service officers were seen clearing the area and snipers were seen on the roof of the building. Press at the White House were told to 'shelter in place'.

Rope burn to neck of black girl, 12, ignites dispute in Dallas, Texas

Sandy Rougely claims her 12-year-old daughter (left and right) came back from a school trip with a rope burn (injuries circled, left) around her neck and that she was the victim of racially-motivated attack. The girl was on a class trip with Live Oak Classical School (inset), in Waco, Texas, when a rope swing got caught around her neck. The student thinks three white boys tied the rope around her neck on purpose. Ms Rougely is now suing the school for $2.7million. She said the first thing she knew about her daughter being hurt was when she returned from the camp-out with the ligature mark around her neck, that made it look like someone 'ripped her neck apart and stitched it back together'. The school claimed it was an accident and said the family's attorneys were exploiting the girl's race to win the lawsuit.

Jiffy Lube technicians forget to refasten nuts causing SUV wheels to fly off in California

Carl Brewer's Toyota 4Runner SUV (wreckage pictured) has been totaled after bungling Jiffy Lube technicians forgot to refasten its lug nuts following a brake change, causing all four wheels to fly off. After the brakes were replaced, a technician offered to take the vehicle for a test drive. The engineer returned - without his car - and told his boss: 'Everything fell off.' The red-faced technician then revealed to Mr Brewer that all four wheels had fallen off the SUV and it later emerged that none of the lug nuts had been attached properly after the brake change. With no wheels on the car, the engineer had careered into two road signs, denting the car and smashing its windscreen (top right). The Jiffy Lube franchisee - who was on his first day in the job - agreed to pay for a week's car rental for Mr Brewer and will replace his daughter's car seat, which was damaged in the smash. The business owner also offered to pay Mr Brewer the value of his SUV, but he has decided to pursue compensation through his insurer and California's attorney general.

The most congested islands on earth

For example, Santa Cruz del Islote (top left) off Colombia has a population density equivalent of about 300,000 people per square mile - far more than bustling Manhattan (bottom left). Venice (top right) is tiny but has a population of 270,000, while the old town of Lubeck (bottom right) in Germany has outgrown its island and sprawled into the surrounding areas.

Florida man arrested in dramatic video after he 'kidnapped 51-year-old woman'

Thomas Raymond Gorman (insert), 54 of Lakeland, Florida, was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a woman and leading police on a high-speed car chase in Warren County, Ohio, on Sunday. During a traffic stop the 51-year-old woman signaled to police that she needed help, which caused Gorman to drive off, dragging an officer a short way. Gorman eventually lost control of his vehicle and was arrested. He is in custody being held on a collective $2,839,306 bond between all the charges, according to Warren County Police.

The officer stopped the blonde woman in a red sports car in Puebla, Mexico. The person who filmed the passionate embrace claimed they began kissing (left and centre) after the woman asked the officer how she could 'fix things' to which he replied: 'However you want'. The video ends with the woman walking back to her car (right) although local reports claimed the pair arranged to meet up afterwards in a nearby convenience store.
