Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks tap tech to light up smartphone screens

Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks will use specially designed technology to integrate smartphones into the spectacular New York City display this year.

Set over the East River, more than 56,000 effects will feature in the display, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.  For the first time, however, revelers will be able to synch their phones with the fireworks and see an impressive array of colors light up their screens.

Macy’s has teamed up with the Makelight app to produce the digital fireworks display. Makelight CEO Joanna Alpe told FoxNews.com that the free app synchronizes the phones by playing a specially designed lightshow that matches the color, tempo and dynamic explosions of the fireworks. More →

Apple has a brilliant way to make one-handed iPhone use great again

Apple has a brilliant way to make one-handed iPhone use great again

Remember how Apple used to make a big deal about the iPhone being the only smartphone that you could easily operate with one hand? It was a constant argument against increasing the iPhone’s screen size. But the company eventually launched iPhones that have displays bigger than the four-inch screen Apple used for years, and one-hand operation isn’t as easy.

Apple created a new home button gesture called Reachability (image above) that’s helps, but some people rarely use it. The company now has an even better idea for fixing one-hand operation on the iPhone, which might be better than shrinking down the display, as Samsung does it on some of its flagships.

Best thing about Google’s 2016 Nexus phones: They’ll finally copy the iPhone properly

For the first time in its history, Google launched two new Nexus handsets last year including the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P, copying Apple’s new iPhone launch strategy. But Google didn’t get it right on the first try. Thankfully, it looks like things are about to change thanks to a big new update – assuming the latest Nexus leaks are accurate, that is. More →

Leaked photo probably just revealed the Galaxy Note 7’s best new feature

Leaked photo probably just revealed the Galaxy Note 7’s best new feature

If Microsoft can skip Windows 9 and go straight from 8 to 10, Samsung can hop past 6 and go right from 2015’s Galaxy Note 5 to this year’s Galaxy Note 7. In fact, Samsung’s move at least makes sense — it’s jumping past 6 so that each year’s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note releases have the same number. In Microsoft’s case, the company just really, reeeeeally wanted people to forget about Windows 8 so it went straight to the nice round number 10 to start fresh.

A series of rumors has painted a fairly complete picture of the upcoming Galaxy Note 7, which is set to be one of the hottest new smartphones of the year. But now, a new leaked photo may have just confirmed one of the new phablet’s most revolutionary new features. More →

A roundup of original iPhone reviews that got everything completely wrong

A roundup of original iPhone reviews that got everything completely wrong

By on July 1, 2016 at 10:56 AM.

When the iPhone burst onto the scene in 2007, it was evident that the world of mobile technology would never be the same. While the original iPhone admittedly had its fair share of shortcomings (it lacked 3G, MMS support, copy and paste etc.), its multitouch display and full web browser were immediate game-changers. Without equivocation, the iPhone quickly, if not instantly, became the blueprint upon which all other smartphone manufacturers based their own hardware and software designs.

Yesterday we highlighted a number of positive reviews that accompanied the release of the original iPhone nine years ago this week. But as tends to be the case in the tech world, not everyone at the time was able to appreciate the immediate impact that the iPhone was poised to exert over the entire tech industry. Rather predictably, an onslaught of short-sighted and pessimistic reviews tended to hone in on all of the features the iPhone lacked rather than looking at all of the revolutionary new features it introduced into the mainstream. Some reviews, believe it or not, even criticized the iPhone for boasting too many features.

Apple is rumored to launch the iPhone 7 in a new color this year. After last year’s rose gold iPhone, we’re going to get either a blue or black new option this year, according to reports that are yet to be confirmed. Designers are having a field day with these rumors, creating all sorts of 3D renders of the blue or “Space Black” iPhone 7. Martin Hajek, one of our favorite artists when it comes to creating images of unreleased Apple devices based on the latest rumors, has his own take on a black iPhone 7. More →

This is the iPhone 7 leak we’ve been waiting for

This is the iPhone 7 leak we’ve been waiting for

A few days ago, a sketchy leak from China showing the purported pricing structure for the iPhone 7 series hinted that Apple would finally ditch the 16GB storage tier, and replace it with a 32GB iPhone. Strangely enough, that leak suggested the iPhone 7 would be available in three versions, including one 4.7-inch model and two 5.5-inch variations (Plus and Pro), just as some early iPhone 7 rumors claimed.

Now a second report from China seems to reinforce last week’s story, and we sincerely hope it turns out to be accurate. More →

Apple’s iPhone turns nine: 5 ways it’s still better than Android

Apple’s iPhone turns nine: 5 ways it’s still better than Android

By on June 30, 2016 at 11:24 AM.

Apple changed the world nine years ago when it released the first iPhone. It sounds hyperbolic but I assure you, the original iPhone quite literally reshaped the mobile industry. It also changed the way we access information and connect with each other. The giants of the industry at the time have now all but vanished. Android, which was being developed as a terrible BlackBerry copy, was reimagined and released as the platform we now know.

There have been plenty of retrospective pieces covering the iPhone to celebrate its nine-year anniversary, and some have been fairly interesting. But in light of all the negativity currently surrounding Apple’s next-generation iPhone, I thought it might be nice to look at some of the ways Apple’s mobile phone is still far better than its chief rival, Android. Samsung Galaxy Note Selfie Ugly

Samsung thinks you’re ugly

Samsung thinks you’re ugly

Hey you, Samsung Galaxy-wielding selfie taker. You’re ugly. I’m serious. And it’s not my opinion either. It’s Samsung’s professional opinion about its customers who buy Galaxy phones in general. That means you, too.

You see, it appears that BY DEFAULT, the selfie camera has beautification features that make you look a lot better in pictures than you do in person. While that’s definitely a nice editing tool for photos, it’s also very politically incorrect. Disrespectful is one other word I’d use for it.

This is how hot a 3D Touch home button would look on the iPhone 7

By on June 30, 2016 at 10:09 AM.

Look at that home button on the iPhone 6s Plus pictured at the top of this post. Don’t you just hate it? Sitting there all smug. Taking up precious real estate on the face of the iPhone that could be put to much better use by, say, a bigger display. It’s taunting us, and we don’t like it one bit. But the good news is that according to report after report, it appears as though we won’t have to put up with that obnoxious home button for much longer. More →
