Our Purpose
/r/Warcollege exists is to educate about and discuss military history, from the ancients to Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Ukraine Hybrid War.
Questions, essays, interesting links, or book reviews about a topic are welcome here. Share a military history video! Post that essay on the Battle of Jena, or teach about a nation's style of warfare, discuss the upsides and downsides of infantry doctrines through the ages.
Participation comes first, and you don't have to be an expert to answer a question asked (as long as you can provide sources when asked; we have a handy guide as to how to write an answer here).
Subreddit Rules
In General
- Be polite and informative. Do not accuse others, but ask them for their sources. Be ready to agree to disagree.
- No grandstanding. If you have a point, make it, but do not belabor it. Engage the others' arguments.
- No off topic posts.
- Don't insult others or use racist or bigoted language. Bigoted language of any kind will result in a ban.
- That includes the denial of atrocities (for example: The Holocaust, or the Holodomor). Do not engage in genocide olympics, the bodycounts do not matter.
Asking Questions & Other Submissions
- Avoid current events: If it is in the news, it's not okay for us; if it is inspired by the news, it is a-okay.
- Do not ask questions in bad faith. If you ask a question just to push your viewpoint, the thread will be removed.
- Asking questions is a great way to start a conversation and learn. Questions are encouraged.
- However, no "through time" questions, or other questions that invite subjective, rather than source-able, answers.
- If you submit something, explain why you are submitting it. Get a discussion starting.
Giving Answers
- Answers to questions should be comprehensive and in-depth. Very short answers will be deleted out of hand. Check out our guide on how to write a great answer here.
- Sources are encouraged, and must be provided if asked for.
- Wikipedia is not a source. Neither is Dan Carlin, or other difficult to verify media (podcasts, documentaries, &c).
- Photos and documentaries which support an answer are encouraged, but generic images, gifs, and internet memes are not.
