"If you only hear one side of the story, at some point you have to question who the writer is," tells us

Brief But Spectacular: Harvard Ph.D. candidate Clint Smith
"Oppression doesn't disappear just because you decided not to teach us that chapter. If you only hear one side of the story, at some point you have to question who the writer is," Smith tells us.

Thomas Jefferson, for example, was deeply brilliant & deeply racist. We have to hold both of those truths at once to fully understand him.

  4. 4 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Part of what an honest assessment of history demands is that we hold complicated truths together. Our history is a series of contradictions.

  5. 6 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Last night I was on PBS discussing why it's important to complicate our understanding of American history.

Have been categorizing Trump's positions on Muslims as 'racism' for a while, & finally decided I should explain why

  10. ಫೆಬ್ರ 1

25% of doctors are foreign born Many come from Muslim-majority countries Including the 7 states restricted by Like this man

Make sure to follow who works for & will be posting about the contributions of black scientists throughout the entire month.

This , I'm going to share a resource about a different black scientist every day. Today's scientist: chemist Percy Julian

I could go on & on (this is what part of my dissertation is about) but there's much to be said for the moral impetus of education in prisons

  16. ಫೆಬ್ರ 2

Education in prison has always been framed through a utilitarian framework, but we should start thinking of it as a fundamental human right.

  17. ಫೆಬ್ರ 2

(That number would be higher if there wasn't profound job discrimination against the formerly incarcerated. See research of )

  18. ಫೆಬ್ರ 2

The research is clear, prisoners w/ access to ed are 43% less likely to experience recidivism & 13% more likely to get a job after release.

  19. ಫೆಬ್ರ 2

One by one universities pulled out of prisons because it was too expensive, thus prisoners found themselves w/o access to college education.

  20. ಫೆಬ್ರ 2

In the 1994 crime bill, Congress made people in prison ineligible for pell grants, which decimated the educational infrastructure of prisons

  21. ಫೆಬ್ರ 2

Educational opportunities have been systemically stripped from people in prison since the 1994 crime bill. They are desperate for education.
