Set up & manage a family on Google Play

When you set up a family on Google Play, your family gets access to features like purchase approval and the Google Play Music family plan.

How families on Google Play work

When you set up a family group on Google Play, you add a family payment method. If you're the family manager, you're responsible for all purchases your family makes using the family payment method.

The family manager can also purchase family features like the Google Play Music family plan.

First, make sure you can set up a family group

Family manager requirements

To set up a family group on Google Play, you must meet all these requirements:

  • Be 18 or older
  • Have a valid credit card
  • Live in one of the countries below
  • Can't be part of another family group on Google Play
  • Have a Google Account that isn't through your work or school 

Note: You can only switch family groups once a year.

Family member requirements

Once a family manager creates their family group, they can invite up to 5 family members.

Anyone you invite to your family group must meet all these requirements:

  • Be 13 years or older
  • Have a Google Account that isn't through their work or school
  • Live in the same country as the family manager
  • Can't be part of another family group on Google Play

Note: Family members can only switch family groups once a year.

Next, set up your family group

  1. Open the Play Music app on your Android device Google Play Music Icon. You can't set up a family from an iOS device or a browser. 
  2. In the top left corner, touch the Menu icon Google Play Music Menu icon.
  3. Touch Subscribe > Family > Set up family > Get started > Continue.
  4. To continue, you need to add a family payment method which family members can use to make purchases. You can either select an existing credit card, or add a new one.
  5. Touch Accept.
  6. Invite members to your family. Make sure you only invite trusted family members since you'll be responsible for purchases they make with the family payment method. 
  7. Touch Invite > Continue > Continue > Subscribe.
  8. Touch Continue > Continue music purchase.
  9. Select the payment method you want to use for your family's subscription.
  10. Touch Subscribe.
  11. When new people join your family, you'll get an email confirmation. 

Manage your family group

Add someone to your family group

If you're the family manager, you can invite up to 5 people to your family group.

  1. Open the Play Store app Google Play.
  2. In the top left, touch the Menu icon Google Play Music Menu icon > Account.
  3. In the "Family" section, touch Manage family members > Invite family members.
  4. Type the email address or phone number of the person you want to invite.
  5. Touch Send.
  6. You'll get an email notification when someone joins your family.
Remove someone from your family group

What happens when you remove someone from your family group

When someone is removed from your family group, they'll get an email notification that they've been removed. They won't be able to make new purchases using the family payment method, or access any family features.

If any purchases they made using the family payment method are pending, you'll still be charged for them. However, you may be able to request a refund for unwanted or accidental purchases.

The person you remove from your family group will still keep their Google Account and any content they purchased using the family payment method.

How to remove someone from your family group

  1. Open the Play Store app Google Play.
  2. In the top left, touch the Menu icon Google Play Music Menu icon > Account.
  3. In the "Family" section, touch Manage family members.
  4. Touch the name of the family member you want to remove.
  5. In the top right corner, touch the Menu icon > Remove member > Remove.
Delete your family group

What happens when you delete your family group

If you're the family manager, you can delete your family group on Google Play.

When you delete your family group, everyone will still keep their Google Accounts and anything they purchased using the family payment method.

If any purchases they made using the family payment method are pending, you'll still be charged for them. However, you may be able to request a refund for unwanted or accidental purchases.

Delete your family group

  1. Open the Play Store app Google Play.
  2. In the top left, touch the the Menu icon Google Play Music Menu icon > Account > Manage family group.
  3. In the top right, touch the Menu icon > Delete family group > Delete.
Change family groups

If you're the family manager, you have to delete your family group before you can join a new one.

Note: You can only change family groups once per year. If you join a new family group on Google Play, you won't be able to join another one for 12 months.

Manage the family payment method

When you set up a family group on Google Play, you add a family payment method. If you're the family manager, you're responsible for all purchases your family makes using the family payment method.

What information your family members see

Your family members may see your name, photo, email address, and age group.

Because the family manager is responsible for the family payment method, you'll see all purchases your family members make using the family payment method.

 

Note: You can also manage your family group from a browser by visiting the Family Group page of your Google Account.

Troubleshoot issues

Problems with invitations

I ran out of invitations

You can only invite up to 5 people to join your family group.

If someone leaves your family group, or an invitation that you sent expires in two weeks, you'll be able to send more invitations.

I sent an invitation, but my family member never got it

There are a few reasons the family member you invited doesn't see your invitation:

  • They've received an email invitation before, and opted out of getting future emails. If they still want to join your family, you can invite them the text message option instead.
  • The person you invited blocked you on Gmail, or has notifications turned off. To find your invitation, they can search for emails from [email protected].
  • The person you invited blocked or muted you on Google+ or Hangouts.
I got an error when creating my family group

Age requirement

You must be 18 or older to manage a family group. If you're 13 - 17 years old, you can still join someone else's family.

You're already in a family group

You can only be part of one family group at a time. To create a new family group, you need to delete your current family group and then create a new one.

Account not supported

You can't create a family group with a Google for Work for Google for Education account.

Can't create family group

You can only change family groups once every 12 months. If you see this error, it's because you've already switched family groups this year. You'll need to wait 12 months until you can join a new family or create one.

I don't see the option to create a family

If you don't see the option to create a family, it could be because of one of these reasons:

  • You don't meet the family manager requirements
  • You're in a Google Play Music free trial
  • Your Google Play Music app needs to be updated
