The local area guide to living in Huddersfield

The bustling market town of Huddersfield is the largest settlement in West Yorkshire. In fact, the town is one of the largest in the UK, listed as 11th in a recent table published by the BBC. The populous town has also been declared the third happiest place to live in the UK – not a surprise when you consider the thriving and friendly community and the abundance of activities that sit on your doorstep. Furthermore, a number of popular cities are also within easy reach – including Bradford, Leeds, and Manchester.

The University is a huge part of the community and draws many students to the town. It’s also the town’s biggest employer. Aside from the university, other well-loved features of Huddersfield include its stunning Victorian buildings, nearby countryside surroundings, great shopping facilities, and superb music scene. The town is also relatively cheap to live in too, with property being extremely affordable.

Information about the local residents

The population here is around 150,000 and is expected to grow over the coming years. In fact, in a report by The Office for National Statistics in 2006, it was identified that an additional 46,000 households would need to be built in the area by 2033 to deal with the growing population. Being a university town, the residents here are younger than the national average too, with 31% of all 18-24 year olds in full time education.

Huddersfield is also ethnically diverse. The University has over 21,000 students from over 120 countries. Ethnic groups include Asian and British Asian, black and black British, and mixed race. Likewise, there are a number of religions practised here too, with 10% of the population listed as Muslim at the time of the 2011 census.

Nearby schools

There is a good mix of primary schools and secondary schools in Huddersfield, as well as two sixth form colleges and the University. In a recent analysis of primary schools by Trinity Mirror, Meltham Moor, in Birmingham Lane, came out on top. Spring Grove Junior, Infant and Nursery School also performed well, as did Slaithwaite C of E Junior and Infant School. Furthermore, the top ranked school in Kirklees was Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School in Heckmondwike and the best school in Calderdale was Longroyde Junior School in Rastrick.

High performing secondary schools included Moor End, Rawthorpe, Salendine Nook and Almondbury. The local independent school, Huddersfield Grammar, also has a good reputation. While all of these schools offer education for students up to the age of 18, the local sixth form colleges, Huddersfield New College and Greenhead College, are other good alternatives.

Getting around

Huddersfield connects to the motorway via the M1 and M62, and there are a number of routes into the market town itself. Alternatively, for travel outside of the region, you might want to catch a train from the local station, which boasts a comprehensive number of routes and services.

Within the town, you’ll find good bus connections, with First Calderdale & Huddersfield providing most of the local services. Navigating the town’s roads is also simple and there’s little congestion here, making any daily commute relatively easy.

Local shops

When it comes to shopping for your groceries, you certainly won’t be disappointed. Not only is there a Tesco and a Sainsbury’s, but Huddersfield also has a strong local food growing community – so it’s easy to get your hands on produce that’s 100% fresh.

All your usual shopping requirements can be met in the town centre too. Kingsgate, the Packhorse Precinct and the Piazza, which offers stores like BHS and Boots, are the three main shopping areas and offer a variety of high street shops and independent stores. For more unusual finds, head to Byram Arcade, the pretty Victorian shopping arcade, home to specialist and independent shops.
