The local area guide to living in Glasgow
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, and the third largest in the whole of the United Kingdom. It was once a small rural village just off the River Clyde, and is now the largest seaport in Britain. The Industrial Revolution ushered in a new age of prosperity in Glasgow, and the city is often heralded as being the 'Second City of the British Empire'. Economically, Glasgow remains a powerhouse within Europe.
In the famous West End of Glasgow, you can find countless areas of interest, be it restaurants, bars, hotels or even tea rooms. Kelvingrove Park is a beautiful public park located on the River Kelvin, and was created in 1852 by Sir Joseph Paxton. It is also home to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, which is free to enter, and is the most visited museum in the United Kingdom outside of London.
In the East End, 'The Barras' can be found, which is a bustling indoor marketplace, where you can buy all types of things from fruit and vegetables, to antiques and collectables. There is a major concert venue in the East End as well, the Barrowland Ballroom, which was first opened back in 1934.
Information about the local residents
There are around 598,830 inhabitants in Glasgow, according to the 2011 Census. Incredibly, Glasgow makes up 11.4% of the entire Scottish population. The makeup of Glasgow is a significantly young one, as 16-29 year olds account for 24% of the total population, dwarfing the national figure of 18.7%.
Glasgow is the most multicultural and diverse city in Scotland, with 31% of Scotland's ethnic minority community hailing from here. Having said that, 94% of Glaswegians are classed as white, with a considerable Irish contingent.
Nearby schools
The Jordanhill School, which received glowing HMIe reports, is one of the standout state schools in Glasgow, and offers both primary and secondary level education. Hillhead Primary School is a hugely successful primary school, and has recently been renovated, relocating to Kelvingrove Park. The Hyndland Secondary School is another reputable school, as are Holyrood Secondary School, and Whitehill Secondary School.
There are also a number of independent schools, such as Hutchesons' Grammar School, St Aloysius' College, The Glasgow Academy, and Craigholme School.
Getting around
From Glasgow, you can take a train and connect to practically anywhere in the UK, with the two main stations being Central Station and Queen Street Station. The underground subway system here was the third of its kind built in the world, coming after the creation of the London Underground and the Budapest Metro.
There is an extensive bus network in the city, as well as an active night bus system. There are also over 301 km of cycle lanes in Glasgow, with the council eager to encourage residents to become more eco-friendly.
The M8 motorway connects Glasgow and Edinburgh, and is the busiest motorway in all of Scotland. Other notable motorways include the A74(M), M6 and M74.
Local shops
Glasgow is synonymous with culture, and is the heartbeat of Scotland when it comes to hosting big events such as the Scottish Opera, The National Theatre of Scotland, and the Scottish Ballet. In 2008, it became a UNESCO city of music.
Glasgow is unrivalled when it comes to shopping in Scotland, and only London surpasses it in the UK. The St. Enoch Centre and the Buchanan Galleries are the principal shopping centres of the city, and they both feature all of the main brands and chains that you can think of.
