Nigeria, 2016: Saleh, 6, is vaccinated against polio in the Jiddari Polo area of Maiduguri, in Borno State. The re-emergence of polio after two years with no recorded cases in north-eastern Nigeria is of great concern in a region already in crisis. A massive emergency polio immunization campaign in October targeted more than 30 million children in 18 high-risk states across the country, including in Borno – where four cases of polio have been confirmed since August 2016.
“We risked our lives to come here,” said Mohammad, 17, “We knew it is not safe. We do it, or we die.”
