As the largest country (in terms of land area) on mainland South East Asia, Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) has huge agricultural potential along with an abundance of natural resources. The "Land of Pagodas" with a (best estimated) population of over 50 million is in the process of undergoing transformational political and economic developments. The watershed national elections in 2015 which led to the election of Myanmar's first civilian leader in decades have intensified the pace of the country's transition towards greater openness, empowerment and inclusion, notwithstanding the continued significant influence of the military.
Growth has accelerated as a result of better macroeconomic management, increased gas production and exports, and stronger performance in non-gas sectors as the economy has opened up. Whilst growth in Myanmar eased to 7% last year, medium-term growth is projected to average 8.2% yearly.
