Let's not get bent out of shape over 'Transcriptgate'...
A small fracas broke out Friday over the Vatican’s “editing” of remarks made by Pope Francis on Thursday during a convention of the Diocese of Rome - an event which was broadcast on Vatican TV, and which can easily be found on Youtube. At one stage, the pontiff was asked a question about how to prepare young people for marriage today when they have a “fear of the definitive...
A few observations on John Allen's points about 'Transcriptgage'...
In a day fraught with canonical confusion may I offer a few observations on some journalistic issues I noticed along the way? First, I find John Allen’s pooh-poohing of widespread concerns that Francis’ remarks, yet again, needed to be “walked-back” by Vatican spin doctors off-putting in several respects. Ignoring Allen’s patronizing tone and his caricaturing of Vatican critics as emitting “howls of outrage” over mere “retouching” of the pope’s words...

Deacon Steven D. Greydanus reviews ‘Finding Dory’...
Set one year after Finding Nemo, Finding Dory introduces us to a nearsighted whale shark (Kaitlin Olson), a beluga whale (Ty Burrell) suffering from psychosomatic echolocation dysfunction and an octopus (Ed O’Neill) missing a tentacle (so he’s really a “septapus,” as Dory notes). Oh, and a wall-eyed, disheveled loon who easily imprints on anyone or anything that looks her in the eye and coos just so...
The problem is not that we are lacking leaders; the problem is that we are lacking virtue...
If you go to the websites of many schools, colleges, and universities in America, you will discover that today’s catchword is “leadership.” Slogans like “Training Tomorrow’s Leaders Today” or “Training Future Leaders” are the clickbait of academic life. It’s easy to see why. Many parents might be wondering: Who in the world doesn’t want his son or daughter to grow up to be a leader...

Why pantheism stifles science (and Christianity does not)...
Central to the claim that science was born of Christianity is the flip side of the coin that modern science did not emerge in any other culture. Why? The short answer is that all the other cultures were influenced by pantheism. The explanation takes more ink though. Definition first. The word “pantheism” is borrowed from Latin...
We shouldn’t be ashamed of the Index of Prohibited Books...
It’s like the movement against smoking. The authorities decide that they must keep people from smoking for their own good. Many would ban it if they could, but they can’t, so they require scary warnings on packages, don’t let anyone smoke in public places, prevent sales to minors, restrict advertising and raise the price with really high taxes...

Please stop and say a prayer for the Graves family, who lost their toddler to an alligator at WDW...
The story that’s tugged on everyone’s heartstrings for the last twenty-four hours is the horrible report out of Orlando, that a two-year-old child was snatched by an alligator while playing and watching an outdoor film with his family near Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Hotel. As the search dragged on, we checked back to see if there were updates–and our hearts broke as the hours passed with no report...

The damage done (again) by the Pope's statements on marriage...
The Pope’s statement—if it was relayed accurately and meant seriously—would mean that our society is so thoroughly perverse that it has actually debased human nature. If that were the case, the Catholic Church could not reconcile herself to modern society; the faith would be in open conflict with the modern age. Yet in Amoris Laetitia...
Answering Pope Francis on invalid marriages...
Pope Francis said outright yesterday what before could only be intuited from his comments: that most sacramental marriages today are not valid. According to EWTN News, in an impromptu answer to a layman’s question at the Diocese of Rome’s pastoral congress, the pope said, “[T]he great majority of our sacramental marriages are null...
Will the real Jesus please stand up? A meditation on the Gospel for the 12th Sunday of the Year...
Today’s Gospel sets forth some parameters for picturing Christ. Sadly, just as in the time of Jesus, many today worship a “designer Messiah.” It is not the real, revealed Christ whom they acknowledge and worship. Rather, it is a Christ of their own fashioning, whom they “carve” in the form of an idol and then worship. Let’s examine some of the parameters Jesus sets forth for our acknowledgement and worship of Him...
Vibrant faith emerges from Soviet drabness, thanks to John Paul II...
For several years I organized the Tertio Millennio Seminar in Krakow that every July brings together 10 students from America, 10 from Poland and 10 from other countries that were previously part of the Soviet Union. I first went as a participant in 1999 and over meals during the three weeks of the seminar I asked several students what their life had been like under communism...
The belief in Purgatory is much older than you realize...
Wasn't Purgatory unheard of in Scripture and only invented in the Dark Ages? No. Just the term "Purgatory" arose after the time of the apostles, just as the terms "Trinity", "Christianity", "Second Coming", and "Bible" did. But the idea of Purgatory was already present in the period before Jesus was born...
A response to Fr. James Martin on the Orlando massacre...
Sadly, partisanship reigns even in the face of disaster...
The Orlando massacre was certainly news, but not altogether new. It was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history — 50 dead, including the killer. Yet it was not even the deadliest jihadist massacre of the last several months. There were 130 dead in Paris last November and 70 dead in Pakistan on Easter Sunday. The Orlando terror attack garnered global attention because it was an escalation of terrorism in the American homeland...

Like St. Thomas More, St. Benno of Meissen defended the Church in the face of a royal bully...
Today we remember the august German bishop, St. Benno. Like St. Thomas More and many other figures throughout Church history, he is a great example of a Catholic defending the Church’s prerogatives against their usurpation by the State. Benno was a nobleman who was faithful to the Church at a time that Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV (1050-1106) was trying to make her subservient to the State...
