University leaders and trustees either didn't believe the bad news or were interested in keeping it secret. The seeds for the university's current defense against NCAA sanctions were being sown as far back as 2010 when university lawyers didn't follow a clue ...

Indianapolis streetlight ban causes hundreds of pedestrian deaths

Investigators at the Indianapolis Star uncovered the deadly results of a 20-year-old city hiatus on building sidewalks and a 35-year-old moratorium on street lights, put in place in an attempt to save money on the city’s $2.9 million annual electric bill.

Reporters found that 585 pedestrians had been killed in Marion County since the 1980 street light ban was put in place. In 2015 alone, 27 pedestrians had been killed. The vast majority had been killed at night on streets without lights or sidewalks.

Database reveals FEC is often deadlocked and ineffective

Investigators at NBC News4 in Washington, D.C. and NBC Bay Area reviewed hundreds of pages of documents and vote records to create a database that would provide an answer to allegations that the Federal Election Commission is ineffective.

Their database revealed that it takes an average of 22 months for the commission to decide whether it will even begin an investigation, which results in a hugely delayed lack of enforcement of campaign finance laws. They also found that the FEC’s six members often deadlock on some of the most important, precedent-setting cases, which essentially prevents those cases from ...

Iowa elementary schools misuse seclusion rooms meant as a last resort

An investigation by the Gazette found that Eastern Iowa’s seclusion rooms—small rooms intended to briefly isolate students who are a threat to themselves or others—are sometimes used as an extreme form of punishment for minor misbehavior.

The rooms in the Iowa City school district are typically 6-feet by 6-feet with padded walls and a small window a teacher can look through to observe the child. The Gazette found the use patterns of the rooms through a records request for “seclusion reports” that are filled out every time a child is sent to isolation. The rooms are supposed ...
