FILM LIFE - OR, HOW FILM CAN CHANGE OUR WORLD
"By showing hunger, deprivation, starvation and brutality, as well as endurance and nobility, documentaries inform, prod our memories, even stir us to action. Such films do battle for our very soul."
Documentary film not only plays a major role in informing, educating, and raising awareness to issues that affect us all on a global level but, documentaries also have the ability to affect us on a profound emotional level. I believe this emotional connection is an essential component when viewed in conjunction with an objective analysis of all the available facts and data that relate to a particular topic, subject, or event. This symbiotic relationship of emotion and knowledge is fundamental. It creates the passion and empathy essential to making a well-informed and meaningful humanitarian contribution. It is in this regard that documentary films can prove invaluable.
The purpose of this list is primarily to try to inspire, raise awareness, document, and provide for a multilateral and progressive approach to it's subject-matter. Specifically from a global perspective. This is supported by various documentaries, and relevant links, that address and relate to the universal connection between various facets of the human condition, man and nature, and the ongoing global issues that confront us all. This is supported by factual information, and the views, statements, or quotes, from all walks of life - from world leaders, scientists, activists, artists and documentarians, to the man on the street.
*Please note: Though social and political issues are addressed, the content of this list is devoid of my personal opinion and has no political or religious agenda. Any conclusions regarding the issues or views expressed on this list (including the films and videos contained within) is left entirely to the individual's own analysis and interpretation.
Stephen Spielberg: "I think documentaries are the greatest way to educate an entire generation that doesn't often look back to learn anything about the history that provided a safe haven for so many of us today."
Stephen R. Covey: "Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change."

EXISTENTIAL FILMS
Existentialism is a 20th century termed philosophy concerned with human existence, finding self, and the meaning of life through free will, choice and personal responsibility. The belief is that people are searching to find out who and what they are throughout life as they make choices based on their experiences, beliefs, and outlook. And personal choices become unique without the necessity of an objective form of truth. An existentialist believes that a person should be forced to choose and be responsible without the help of laws, ethnic rules, or traditions.
Listed below are a number of existentially-themed films which I feel address the human condition in a profound, and ultimately, rewarding way. Gaining insight into ourselves and being able to express this with others through these films.
In reverse chronological order and purely subjective.
A special thanks to fellow IMDb users for their invaluable contributions, and thereby making this list a collaborative effort for all those concerned.

The Unearthing (2015)
A Promising Feature Debut
One cannot help but admire aspiring film-makers such as Tristan James Jensen (or TJ for short), having already directed his first feature, 'The Unearthing'-(2015) at the tender age of sixteen. Which is no small feat in itself.
Set in the sleepy town of Stillwater, Minnesota, 'The Unearthing' plays out as a good old-fashioned, coming-of-age, ghost-story. A pleasant surprise when one considers the more obvious route many first-time film-makers would of taken when producing a horror film. Typically, films that are designed to shock in order to make an impact, yet sadly lacking in other departments. This is where 'The Unearthing' differs, where one is made aware of the fact that care has been taken in all departments of the film-making process. That an effort had been made to produce a decent film with limited resources and raw talent. On the whole, I was especially impressed by the film's overall quality, from it's score to the editing process. Not that 'The Unearthing' has no faults. It does. For instance, the film lacks dramatic weight and the screenplay and some of the dialog needs some refining. Yet, fault cannot be given for lack of effort or talent of cast and crew. If anything is lacking, it can be attributed to experience. But if director Tristan James Jensen continues to show this kind of commitment, I am certain this will soon be remedied.
All in all, I found 'The Unearthing' a pleasant and worthwhile viewing experience and I would strongly recommend this film to film-students and anyone interested in supporting young and upcoming talent.
