7 New Netflix Shows to Binge Watch in December 2016, and The Best Episodes of Each
23 hours ago
1. “Trollhunters” Season 1 (available December 23)
Why Should I Watch It? Two big reasons: First, the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Guillermo del Toro, created “Trollhunters,” an animated event series about a teenager who discovers a mystical amulet that unveils a secret civilization of trolls beneath his hometown. If the Oscar nominee himself isn’t enough, there’s another creative force — in addition to the impressive voice cast of Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman and Charlie Saxton — to pay attention to: Said teenager is voiced by Anton Yelchin, in what’s being billed his final role. After debuting two episodes at New York Comic-Con in October, del Toro said he never even discussed replacing Yelchin. “We didn’t go into a meeting,” del Toro said. “We didn’t have a conference. […] He was a great guy to work with, he was proud of what he did, we were proud of what he did. »

Evan Rachel Wood on the ‘Westworld’ Finale: ‘People Are Going to Get Up on Their Seats and Clap’
23 hours ago
[Editor’s Note: spoilers below, through Episode 9 of “Westworld”]
There’s not much Evan Rachel Wood can say about the “Westworld” finale.
“It’s so hard,” Wood said about keeping the show’s many secrets. “I’m excited about being able to say things out loud again.”
Despite one more week of closely guarded twists, what Wood could tell IndieWire is enough to raise even the most excited fan’s expectations. After nine episodes of surprises — starting with Wood’s character, Dolores, killing a pesky fly in the show’s premiere — Wood sums up Episode 10, “The Bicameral Mind,” in one word: “Wow.”
IndieWire spoke with Wood about what to expect on Sunday, how she shared her own fan theories with co-stars during production, and what little she knows about Season 2.

‘Incorporated’ Review: This Vision of the Future Is Also the Scariest Show on TV
30 November 2016 8:00 PM, PST
An upcoming episode of Syfy’s future-set drama “Incorporated” begins with this: a carbon copy of the sort of starving children ads that Sally Struthers used to host in the 1990s. There’s a wistful little boy staring at the camera as he strokes his battered stuffed toy and a pleading, pitying narrator explaining how he and other children like him go days without food or clean water.
Here’s the twist: The little boy’s name is Johnny, and the narrator is speaking Chinese. For 100 yuan a day, generous Chinese souls can help the children of a broken America in the year 2073. Watching that cold open at this exact moment in our history is science fiction that might be a little too real. You can forget about “The Walking Dead” or “The Exorcist”: “Incorporated” may be the scariest show on television.

Director James Burrows on How Grant Tinker – and His Mtm Hit Factory – Changed Television
30 November 2016 6:15 PM, PST
James Burrows, perhaps the most successful TV director in history, owes his lengthy small screen career to Grant Tinker.
Tinker, who died Monday at 90, was a towering television titan who turned Mtm Enterprises into one of the most successful production companies in the 1970s, then took over NBC and led that network from worst to first in the 1980s.
But his legacy lives on, thanks to the writers, producers, directors and stars he championed during his long career. Burrows, who recently directed his 1,000th episode of television (which NBC celebrated with a primetime special), is one of them.
“I owe my entire television career to him,” Burrows told IndieWire.
Burrows was a theater director and stage manager in New York when he worked on the musical “Holly Golightly” (later retitled “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”), starring Mary Tyler Moore and Richard Chamberlain. The show closed after just four nights, but by the end, »

John Oliver’s ‘Last Week Tonight’ Sticks it to Trump and His Failed University — Watch
30 November 2016 1:40 PM, PST
In recognition of President-Elect Trump settling a series of lawsuits this week (for a total of $25 million, just in time to keep Trump from testifying in court on Nov. 28), HBO has released this glorious clip from Episode 73 of John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight,” titled “Debt Buyers.” Oliver’s show might be on hiatus until Feb. 12, 2017, but, lucky for us, he and HBO are still kicking out hilarious (and depressing) segments like this to tide us over.

In the clip, Oliver drags Trump and his self-named university through the mud and draws a frightening comparison between Trump University’s sleazy sales tactics and Trump’s campaign tragedy strategy. What’s even spookier is this episode was filmed back in June, long before the shocking conclusion to the presidential election, which Oliver warmly referred to as “America »

‘Westworld’ Finale: Twists Can’t Answer Season 1’s Biggest Question
30 November 2016 7:43 AM, PST
Everyone’s focused on getting answers in the Season 1 finale of “Westworld,” but first we need to make sure we’re asking the right questions. Amidst the speculation about Dr. Ford’s new narrative, converging timelines, and secret identities, it’s easy to lose focus about what really matters: humanity.
After all, isn’t the central question of HBO’s expansive sci-fi drama what makes a human being, you know, human? Between the moral tests facing each guest and the complex awakenings of select hosts is the quest for meaning; purpose; value as determined not by the appearance of being a member of the human race but by feelings that drive human decisions.
Thus the central question facing the finale — which must be answered in the affirmative for Season 1 to prove successful — is, “Will ‘Westworld’ rediscover its humanity?”
While we all instinctively hope to be shocked and awed by the »

‘Drunk History’ and ‘Hamilton’: Derek Waters on Getting Lin-Manuel Miranda Loaded for Comedy Central
29 November 2016 8:00 PM, PST
While Lin-Manuel Miranda has won a Pulitzer Prize and is now on the verge of an Egot, it’s unlikely that his appearance on Comedy Central’s “Drunk History” will win him any awards. Except, that is, if our hearts count as trophies.
For, even in a year packed with what can only be unimaginable, life-changing experiences, the 35-year-old multi-hyphenate is having a bit of a moment right now. If you went to the movies last weekend, you may have one of the songs he co-wrote for Disney’s “Moana” stuck in your head. And he’s also joined an elite circle of people whose lives have been forever bettered by direct interaction with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, cameoing in videos for The Rock’s official YouTube channel.

‘Sigmund and the Sea Monsters’: Sid and Marty Krofft Reviving ’70s Children’s Show for Amazon
29 November 2016 3:15 PM, PST
A 1970s television classic is getting a revival over at Amazon Studios. The premium entertainment service announced that Sid and Marty Kroft are teaming up with the company to produce a TV reboot of “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.”
“We also look forward to reviving the classic ‘Sigmund and the Sea Monsters’ that has a strong message of friendship,” said Tara Sorensen, Head of Kids Programming at Amazon Studios.
The original “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters” was a live-action children’s show that ran for two seasons from 1973 to 1975. The new version follows the same premise of two brothers, Johnny and Scotty, who befriend Sigmund, a friendly young sea-monster who escapes from his old life and his comically dysfunctional brothers Slurp and Blurp, and hide him in their Clubhouse. The new version adds their cousin Robyn and Captain Barnabas, an ambitious sea-monster hunter portrayed by David Arquette.

‘Beaches’ Remake Trailer: Idina Menzel Belts ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ in Lifetime Promo
29 November 2016 2:10 PM, PST
Early next year Lifetime will be rolling out the small screen remake of Garry Marshall’s 1988 classic “Beaches.” Starring Idina Menzel as Bette Midler’s Cc and Nia Long as Barbara Hershey’s Hillary, the first trailer for the TV revival has been released.
The new “Beaches” differs from the original in that it is set in Venice instead of the original’s Atlantic City, New Jersey. The remake follows Cc and Hillary’s friendship, spanning over several decades. The first sneak peek includes Cc’s rise to fame as a successful singer, the birth of Hillary’s daughter and the unexpected news of her tragic illness.
Menzel can also be heard singing the iconic song “Wind Beneath My Wings,” which she recorded for the film as well as “The Glory of Love,” among others.

MTV Digital Short ‘Love Reset’ Illustrates Damning Effects Of Media Representation — Exclusive
29 November 2016 12:16 PM, PST
In “Love Reset,” the final winner of MTV’s “Look Different” campaign, a white teenage boy sees life as a video game, tallying his masculinity points, while ignoring the Indian girl who passes him, ticking off boxes on an impossible imaginary to do list. Both metaphors are apt, speaking volumes about their subjects’ vastly different daily experiences and forcing the viewer to confront the discomfort of both.
“Look Different” is MTV’s anti-bias campaign and filmmaking competition that invited emerging filmmakers to create short films on the topic of privilege – including racial, gender and sexual orientation. Three projects were chosen: “American Male,” about a closeted gay man and the pressures of masculinity, “See Me In My Black Skin,” about a white guy who dons black face for a party and wakes up black, and “Love Reset,” which premieres exclusively on IndieWire.

Five Things You Need to Know About DirecTV Now, At&T’s New Live Streaming TV Service
29 November 2016 11:02 AM, PST
Don’t call it a “skinny bundle.”
As At&T prepares to launch its over-the-top DirecTV Now offering on Wednesday, the company is taking pains to differentiate itself from rivals such as Sling, Playstation Vue and Hulu’s upcoming live TV service.
As an introductory price, DirecTV Now will offer more than 100 channels (its “Go Big” package) at $35 a month, and charter members will be grandfathered into that price for a period of time.
“The challenge with skinny bundles is your skinny is different from my skinny which is different from someone else’s skinny,” says Brad Bentley, executive vice president of marketing for At&T Entertainment Group.

But it’s unclear how long that $35 offer will last, and when DirecTV Now will revert to that “Go Big” package’s normal $60 price tag. The service’s normal $35 offering (“Live a Little”) carries 60 channels. »
