DGA nominations announced and include frontrunner Damien Chazelle

Today, the Directors Guild of America (or DGA) announced their nominees, further shaping the Oscar race. They come hot on the heels of yesterday featuring the American Society of Cinematographers (or Asc) announcing, as well as the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild. Earlier today, before DGA, the Costume Designers Guild announced too. They’ll all be seen, but the DGA is the one to focus on. They’re the precursor of this lot that’s truly going to shape the race. Historically, you try not to bet against the majority of DGA nominees scoring with Oscar. It’s just a very predictive and powerful guild… As you’ll see momentarily below, the DGA wound up citing the usual three suspects in Damien Chazelle for La La Land, Barry Jenkins for Arrival, and Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester by the Sea. From there, things got interesting. Many pundits, myself included, had predicted »

Can “Deadpool” really become an Oscar nominee?

11 January 2017 9:00 AM, PST

One of the most interesting developments during the recent part of the precursor season is the surprising strength that Deadpool has shown. From the Golden Globes to the Writers Guild to yesterday the Producers Guild, this odd little blockbuster has popped up in a number of places. Not only has it given rise to plenty of folks speculating about its Oscar chances, some are even making the case that a Best Picture nomination could be coming its way. That’s silly, but it does seem likely that the Academy could nominate the film somewhere. Just a few months ago, that would have been inconceivable. Deadpool is certainly one of the little movies that could this time around. A quick summary, for those still in the dark about it. The flick is perhaps the most meta comic book tale we’ve ever seen. Sure, this is also an origin story about »

BAFTA loves “La La Land” and the Producers Guild of America nominations are revealed

10 January 2017 9:25 AM, PST

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America (or PGA) announced their nominations. This comes on the heels of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (better known as BAFTA) announcing their nominees in the wee early hours. Between BAFTA and PGA, a few pieces of the precursor puzzle have been put together. The Oscars still have a bunch of mystery to them, but you can make the case that the Best Picture lineup will strongly reflect what the Producers Guild opted to do. I doubt there will be 100% correlation, since there usually isn’t, but the majority of those cited likely will show up. Especially the ones also cited by the British Academy, their week is off to a strong start, no question about it. Both of these precursors are notable because they do indeed contain crossover with the Academy. As such, BAFTA and PGA actually matter more when »

“La La Land” sets a record as the big winner at the Golden Globes

9 January 2017 12:14 AM, PST

Last night, the glitziest awards show of the season so far went down, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announcing their Golden Globe award winners. As always, the HFPA mixed in acclaim for frontrunners with some truly idiosyncratic selections. Yes, voters opted to continue much of the Oscar status quo, but when the HFPA members diverged from what the precursors and potentially the Academy will favor, boy did they ever go off script. All that will be covered in a moment, but just know that this doesn’t really impact the rest of the season that much. Perception of the race? Sure. But the reality? Not so much. The guilds about to announce this week will be of much more importance. Still, it was certainly fun to watch all of this go down yesterday. For those of you wondering, I got ten of the categories right, which isn’t too shabby. »
