Child prodigy on the piano, performing at Carnegie Hall by the age of 21. During World War II, wrote music for the Army Signals Corps and the OSS (precursor of the CIA) film units. First motion picture work at Eagle-Lion (1948), then 20th Century Fox. Work interrupted by HUAC blacklisting in 1953. Wrote incidental music for the theatre (both on and off Broadway), 1955-1961.
