Buttercup Festival

January 2016
I've just added a chunk of new artwork to the sketchbook page. I recently contributed three blog posts to the blog for Carcanet's New Poetries VI: one, two and three. There are just a few dozen copies of Renaming of the Birds left to buy. I think that's all the news for now. Sometimes I get emails asking if and when Buttercup Festival will restart. The answers to those questions are (1) yes, but (2) no time soon. My days are busy with lots of interesting things, but not, sadly, comics. But I do have a notebook dedicated to ideas and jokes for future BF strips: 48 and counting. So there is hope!

Welcome!
My name is David Troupes. Sometimes, though not at the moment, I produce a comic strip called Buttercup Festival. I also write and publish poetry, other creative work, and critical/academic writing. Buttercup Festival exists in two series: the more recent Series 2 came to an end in 2013 and can be perused above (or begin reading here), and the much older Series 1 is buried here. I've also got a sketchbook page I update sometimes. In the fall of 2014 I began a PhD at the University of Sheffield focusing on the poet Ted Hughes. Want to know a little more about me and my work?

Poetry
In July 2015 a selection of my recent poetry was included in Carcanet's New Poetries VI anthology. I have published two full-length collections with Two Ravens Press, The Simple Men (2012, available for purchase on the poetry page) and Parsimony (2009, sold out). I've also published smaller groups of poems and collaborations: see the poetry page for more details.

Renaming of the Birds
Renaming of the Birds is an illustrated storybook about a young clerk who is assigned to rename all the birds in his town. The book takes the form of a journal kept by the clerk, and proceeds through a whole year, as he ventures farther and farther into the woods, looking for new birds to rename. He ends up sleeping outdoors, travelling all around, building a winter den and going a bit crazy. I self-published Renaming of the Birds in 2013 with a Kickstarter campaign, and you can buy copies directly from me using the button below.
