- Both Nick Cave and Bob Dylan have covered the following songs.
(You click on the song to see when Nick played it.)

- Long Time Man,
Bob Dylan in a 1962 radio show.

by Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, in a 1969 studio session, and was
also recorded and officially released on the 'Feeling Minnesota'
soundtrack in 1996/7.

by Joan Baez as part of the Rolling Thunder tour.
- Blue Suede Shoes
was performed by Dylan with Van Morrison in concert in 1998.
- Just A Closer Walk With Thee is printed in King Ink,
and Dylan performed it with Johnny Cash in 1969.
- Lost Highway is performed
in The Road To God Knows Where which
has often been compared to Dylan's "Don't Look Back" in which he plays
the very same song!
- Fever was performed by Bob Dylan in the 'gospel' tour of 1980 and once in
1981.
- John Lee Hooker's `Tupelo Blues', an inspiration for Nick's
Tupelo, was sung by Dylan on the Basement Tapes.
- Maybe there's another song that Nick has
covered that Bob has done as well?
- Both Nick Cave and Bob Dylan have their own song called
New Morning. The versions
of Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart
are also different.
- From June 1998 FHM Magazine: Q: You're forever being name-dropped by
other musicians. Have you met any of your heroes?
A: No. All the ones I like I haven't yet met. Van
Morrison, Bob Dylan - I've never met them and I'm
quite happy I haven't, so I can harbour all sorts of
romantic illusions about them which I'm sure would
be shattered if I ever met them.
Soon after this, Nick would meet Bob at Glastonbury, 28/6/98.
This event is witnessed by a great photo of the two of them by Bleddyn Butcher
in the fall 1998 issue of
the official Nick Cave fanzine The Witness.
- Nick Cave and Will Oldham met at Lollapalooza 1994 and talked
about music.
Will recalls:
"We then regularly played "New Pony" from Bob Dylan's Street-Legal
album. The pattern of Jack The Ripper from Cave's Henry's Dream
is based on that of "New Pony", and he has some other songs which
borrow extensively from "Street-Legal". Cave apparently saw one of
our shows, came to me later on and said "Street-Legal" was his
favorite Dylan album. To which I said: `I Know` [Will grins]"
I am not aware of any other clear examples, except "How Much Longer"
as used in Loverman, which is also taken from "New Pony".
- Nick has expressed his admiration for Bob Dylan in many interviews.
The Bob Dylan albums that Nick especially loves include:
- The religious albums, especially Slow Train Coming.
- Nashville Skyline (I once read Cave bought a copy of
this album in every city he arrived).
- John Wesley Harding
- Self Portrait
Nick played video clips of "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Series Of Dreams" when he presented
Rage in 1994. He picked "Slow Train Coming" among his 5 favorite songs in
1995. Among 9 things/people that changed his life, Nick listed Bob Dylan,
again referring to the "Slow Train Coming" album.
- Jesse Dylan (Bob's son) produced the video of
Red Right Hand.
-
On 02/03/97, BBC Radio 1, in an interview Nick chose If You See Her,
Say Hello
as his favorite song.
-
Nick selected Gotta Serve Somebody among
his favorite tracks of the 80s in 1989.
- From Mojo magazine, January 1997:
MOJO: What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album?
CAVE: I guess it's Slow Train Coming by Bob Dylan. That's a great record,
full of mean-spirited spirituality. It's a genuinely nasty record, certainly
the nastiest 'Christian' album I've ever come across.
