Commenting is crucial to collaboration amongst your employees. This launch makes it easier for them to work together—even from their mobile devices. In the latest version of the Google Sheets app for Android, users can now add new and reply to existing comments. In the newest Google Docs app for Android, they can now see comments and suggestions in Print Layout view—and then resolve, close, accept, or reject those comments and suggestions—making it simpler to move between their desktop and mobile devices.

android-screenshot-20150928-151019.png
This launch also helps users better create and edit charts in the Sheets app for Android. For instance, if a user a selects a single cell and inserts a chart, we’ll automatically expand that data selection to include the immediately surrounding cells. This will make it easier for users to create robust charts with relevant information. In addition, when an employee creates a new chart, they’ll now see three recommended chart types, which we’ll suggest based on the data they’ve selected.

As a bonus, when your employees download the latest version of the Sheets app for Android, they’ll be able to view the more than 400 new fonts added to Sheets on the web earlier this week.

For more information on these new features, check out the Help Center articles below.

Google Drive lets people organize and access their content in a single, secure location. To make it easier for people to find and interact with that content on the web, today’s launch introduces a smarter sorting experience for the ‘Recent’ view in Drive.
drive-recent.png
The new sorting experience removes the existing sorting dropdown options (‘Last modified,’ ‘Last modified by me,’ and ‘Last opened by me’) and replaces them with a dynamically-generated view based on the actions of the person using Drive. Items will continue to be segmented into time-based sections (‘Today,’ ‘Earlier this week,’ etc), and will now indicate whether each item was opened, modified, or uploaded by the user directly in the UI. The smarter sorting ensures that items acted upon by the user are more likely to be shown than items acted upon by other collaborators.

Sometimes emails are mistakenly marked as spam or put into Trash, and they can be difficult to discover via search. To help address this issue, Gmail will now search in both the Trash and Spam folders (only Trash was indexed previously). If a match is found, a footer at the bottom of search results will indicate the match and direct the user to view the messages.

In addition, if a search query is too general to return useful search results, a different footer will now be shown guiding the user to try refining their query using Gmail advanced search.

Ever deleted a calendar event by mistake and wanted to get it back - just like you can in Gmail and Drive? Now you can: today we’re adding Trash functionality to Google Calendar on the web, providing an easy way for users to view, permanently delete, or restore individual and recurring deleted calendar events. Trash puts calendar users in control by letting them quickly reverse any event mishaps, and limits escalations to Google Apps admins.
trash_gif.gif
Trash is accessible from the calendar's dropdown menu in the "My calendars" section as well as from Calendar Settings. This functionality is available for both primary calendars and secondary calendars for which people have edit rights.

Admins can track events restored or removed from Trash within their domain using Calendar Audit logs in the Admin console.

Check out the Help Center for more information.

Note: The first time a user deletes an event from a shared calendar after the launch, a one-time email notification will be sent to them from Google Calendar, explaining the Trash options and details around sharing settings.

Following the recent addition of the ability to request access to Drive files on Android, today we’re making sharing on the go even easier with several new features in the Drive apps for Android and iOS.

Sharing notifications (Android and iOS)
People using the Drive app can now choose to receive mobile notifications when someone shares a Drive item with them, allowing them to open the file or folder by simply tapping on the notification. If a file/folder owner has notifications turned on and someone requests access to their content, the owner will be notified of the request instantly on their mobile device so they can quickly grant access.

People will be informed of this new feature the first time they use the updated versions of the Drive app, and can choose to turn it on or off in Settings.

Consistent sharing experience across platforms (iOS)
We’re implementing a more consistent sharing experience in Drive (and the Docs editor apps too!) across platforms, including the ability for people using the Drive iOS app to add custom messages to recipients directly from the app when sharing a file.

Seamless sharing to people without a Google account (Android)
Until now, a Google Account was needed to view shared files on an Android device. Now, people can do this without a Google Account just like they can on the web.

An updated version of Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange® (GAMME) is now available:

What’s New
  • Service Accounts and OAuth 2.0 tokens are now used for data migration authorization. This replaces the deprecated OAuth 1.0 protocol.
  • GAMME now uses the Gmail API for mail migration and label creation, replacing the Email Migration API v2 and Email Settings API, respectively.
  • Reserved labels are now prefixed with an underscore to ensure proper nesting in the Gmail web interface. For example, a folder named "Inbox/Receipts" is migrated as "_Inbox/Receipts."
  • If the migration user list includes a user that doesn't exist or there's an authorization issue, GAMME now detects the problem in all cases and doesn't try to migrate that user. Previously, GAMME would try each message individually and the failure would take a longer time.
  • Minor UI and logging improvements.

What’s Fixed
  • Multiple labels with names more than 225 characters long could cause a crash.
  • Messages in subfolders of Deleted Items were not being correctly marked as Trash in Gmail.
  • Messages migrated from Exchange Public Folders to Google Groups show sender as "[email protected]."
  • GAMME would crash if any command line flag or setting content included "%s."
  • GAMME would fail to migrate the sender SMTP address in some rare cases.
  • IMAP commands and responses in the logs were sometimes truncated.

The Google Apps Marketplace offers hundreds of quality enterprise apps that admins can install for their domains, enhancing their employees’ native Google for Work apps with additional functionality and features. We’re now making it easier for admins to determine the apps on the Google Apps Marketplace that work with Android for Work and that can be installed on their end users’ Android devices.

If you are logged in as an Apps for Work admin and visit the Google Apps Marketplace, you’ll now see an Available on Android for Work section that features a select number of apps and links directly to their Google Play for Work counterparts. This initial group of apps will also be easily identifiable via an Android icon in the Available on section of their public listings on the Marketplace.

If your organization has Android for Work enabled and you install one of these Available on Android for Work apps for your domain, you’ll be given the option to visit the Play for Work store, where you can approve the corresponding Android app and begin deploying it to your users. This will allow your employees to get started using native mobile apps more quickly and easily.

In conjunction with the changes described above, we’re also making it simpler to identify apps that work with Google Apps in the Play for Work store. Going forward, if you’re logged in as an Apps admin and visit the Play for Work store, select listings for apps that work with Google Apps will be marked Works with Google Apps and link to their Marketplace counterparts. If you have Android for Work enabled and approve one of those apps, you’ll be given the option to navigate directly to that counterpart on the Marketplace and install it for your domain.
Asana.png
In addition, much like on the Marketplace, the Play for Work store will now display a Works with Google Apps section on its homepage. This section will allow you to quickly identify those Play for Work apps that have a Marketplace counterpart.
PfW Homepage.png
Initially, only a small group of apps will be featured in these Available on Android for Work and Works with Google Apps sections, though we’re looking to add more apps in the future.

Google Apps aims to provide customers with a seamless experience when interacting with files and attachments, regardless of their file type. Today’s launch will provide a more consistent and useful experience when previewing Excel and other spreadsheet files (e.g. .csv, .tsv, .ods) in Google Drive and Gmail on the web.

When spreadsheet files are opened in Drive or in Gmail as an attachment, the content will now be quickly and cleanly displayed in a view-only format that is searchable and easily navigable. People can then decide to print, download, share, or open the file in Google Sheets or another app for editing.

Do you purchase and give your employees Android phones and tablets to use at work? If so, our updated EMM solution now makes it easier for those employees to get their devices up and running, while also affording you complete management control.

For organizations that have enabled Android for Work, a new option in the Admin console (Device management > Mobile > Device management settings) is now available to manage company-owned devices running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow).

When you enable that option, an employee who adds a work account to a new device will be asked if the organization owns that device. Once confirmed, the Google Apps Device Policy app will automatically install and complete the steps necessary to provision the device and the user’s work account. That employee will then be ready to go—they can easily find approved mobile apps in the Google Play for Work store, and they’ll be signed in to any Google applications (like Gmail and Drive).

Once set up, an employee’s company-owned device will be governed by full device management (MDM) and application management (MAM) capabilities, meaning you’ll be able to require passwords, remotely wipe company information, and approve apps to be used at work. Furthermore, you’ll now be able to restrict select wireless and network settings (like mobile network, WiFi, and VPN), sharing settings (like screen capture and USB file transfer), user/account creation, and the ability to factory reset the device. Support for company-owned devices can be enabled at the domain or OU level.

In addition to the changes outlined above, which apply to company-owned Android devices running 6.0 (Marshmallow), we’ve streamlined the account setup flow for user-owned devices running 5.x (Lollipop). Employees with these devices no longer need to manually install the Google Apps Device Policy app from the Play for Work store to set up their devices; instead, the Device Policy app will be automatically installed and activated.

Check out the Help Center articles below for more information. These features will roll out gradually over the course of the next few weeks.

The latest versions of the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides Android apps include several new features that make it easier to work on your mobile device. You can now:

  • View more content at one time in Sheets - Now, when you scroll down or zoom in on a spreadsheet, we’ll hide your toolbars and headers so that you can see more of your content on the screen at one time. To bring those toolbars and headers back, simply scroll up or zoom out.

  • View existing filters in Sheets - If you apply filters to your data in Sheets on the web, those filters will now appear in the Sheets Android app as well (previously, you might not have known that you were viewing filtered content).

  • Paste only values, formatting, and more in Sheets - Already available in Sheets on the web, the Paste special feature in the Sheets Android app allows you to copy content and then paste only the associated values, formatting, formula, data validation, or conditional formatting. You can also paste everything but borders or paste your content in a transposed order.

  • Hyperlink text and shapes in Slides - You can now insert new and edit existing links in your presentations directly from the Slides Android app toolbar and context menu.

  • Use superscripts and subscripts in Docs and Slides - Create superscript and subscript text in the Docs and Slides Android apps using the text formatting palette.

In a Google Apps domain, admin role management (i.e. create, assign, and update admin roles) is a critical function for super admins that helps them distribute admin responsibilities in a more secure manner. Until now, this functionality was only available via the Admin console UI.
This is what Role management looks like in the Admin console, but now you can also do this programmatically with the Roles API.

Today’s launch of the Roles API (one of the Admin SDK Directory APIs) enables developers to build admin tools that can perform role management programmatically.

This new API will be useful to admins who have built internal admin tools using the Admin SDK and to developers of third-party admin tools. Both can now use the Roles API to provide selective access to Delegated Admins (DAs) to specific admin capabilities within third-party applications.

Here are some examples of use cases where the Roles API can be leveraged:
  • A third-party user management app that relies on the Admin SDK to perform various user-related operations can now use the Roles API to selectively show the capabilities of user management DAs, such as creating/deleting users and resetting passwords.
  • A mobile device management (MDM) app developer looking to build a tool for access by Mobile Management DAs can use the Roles API to determine the privileges of the logged-in DA and selectively display MDM-related admin functionality.
  • Admins (or admin tools) can now programmatically create reports on admin role assignments which can help super admins better manage access to DAs.

For more information and to get started, please check out the Roles API documentation. We look forward to helping more admins manage their domains in a more programmatic way so they can focus on more critical aspects of managing their corporate IT infrastructure.

Businesses today are investing in numerous cloud applications to provide the simple, secure, and customized experience for their employees that comes with moving to the cloud. Each application, however, can require its own set of user IDs and passwords, creating a huge amount of overhead and complexity for both admins and employees alike.

To help simplify this experience, we’re enhancing our OpenID Connect (OIDC) Identity Provider support that can already be used with many SaaS apps in the Google Apps Marketplace, and adding support for SAML 2.0 (Security Assertion Markup Language) for more than 15 popular SaaS providers, including Salesforce, Workday and Dropbox. We’re also making it easy for admins to add new custom SAML and custom OIDC app integrations.

These new features allow admins to greatly reduce the time investment with managing multiple cloud applications, and allow employees to use their Google Apps credentials as their single login for all of the tools they need.
These single sign-on options help address the growing demand for a central cloud-based identity service. Check out our Identity whitepaper for a complete overview and the Help Center for more information on SAML apps set-up details and features, and a full list of pre-integrated cloud applications.

To provide developers and administrators with more fine-grained control, the Google Apps Admin SDK now includes new domain management features. These new APIs let you programmatically manage domains for your Google Apps account, similar to other RESTful resources like UsersGroups, etc., providing a superset of the domain management capabilities available on the Domains page in the Admin console today.

Change your primary domain
The Customers API gives enterprise developers and administrators the ability to swap the current primary domain with a selected secondary domain for a Google Apps installation. The “change primary” operation is essentially transparent to the user, but users moved to the secondary domain will be subject to certain restrictions (refer to this Help Center article for details). Customers who want to rebrand their business with a new primary domain can follow this up by renaming users from the old (now secondary) to the new (now primary) domain using the Users API.

Add and remove domains and aliases
The Domains API lets developers create tools for administrators to add and remove domains, similar to the functionality available on the Domains page in the Admin console. In addition, the API lets you programmatically add aliases for any domain, primary or secondary, but aliases for secondary domains can only be added via the API.

Google account owners with Google+ enabled have the option to add a photo to their account profile to signify when they are logged in and help make it clear which account they are using. To extend these benefits to those account owners who haven’t added a photo to their account, we’ll be replacing the default Google account avatar with a custom avatar showing the account owner’s first or last initial (or digraph, where applicable), depending on the structure of their name. In some cases where initials are not available, a color alone will be used.

Starting this week, Google Apps users* with Google+ enabled who haven’t set an account photo will see this change in the Google Bar. The change will be gradually reflected across all Google products over the coming months.

*Note: Users with initials using scripts other than Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean will see this change later this year.
