Check out all the exciting new tech coming to your next laptop

Apple keeps telling us that iPad is the future of computing, and that may indeed be the case. The iPad Pro can certainly replace a laptop for many of our daily computing needs, but laptops are still the better choice when it comes to work. MacBooks are still setting the tone in the business, while Windows 10 is allowing OEMs to offer users exciting 2-in-1 notebooks that operate both as a tablet and a laptop. While sales aren’t what they used to be for most notebook makers, this year’s generation of laptops are shaping up to be more exciting than ever. More →

Apple has a brilliant way to make one-handed iPhone use great again

Apple has a brilliant way to make one-handed iPhone use great again

Remember how Apple used to make a big deal about the iPhone being the only smartphone that you could easily operate with one hand? It was a constant argument against increasing the iPhone’s screen size. But the company eventually launched iPhones that have displays bigger than the four-inch screen Apple used for years, and one-hand operation isn’t as easy.

Apple created a new home button gesture called Reachability (image above) that’s helps, but some people rarely use it. The company now has an even better idea for fixing one-hand operation on the iPhone, which might be better than shrinking down the display, as Samsung does it on some of its flagships.

Apple blasts Spotify for wanting special App Store treatment

Apple blasts Spotify for wanting special App Store treatment

There’s certainly no love lost between Apple and Spotify as the rivalry between the two companies came to a head earlier this week. Spotify’s general counsel, if you recall, recently lambasted Apple for refusing to approve Spotify’s latest app update because the app does not make use of Apple’s proprietary billing system.

In a scathing letter sent to Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell on June 26, Spotify said that Apple’s actions might run afoul of antitrust law and that Apple is using the “App Store approval process as a weapon to harm competitors.”

A roundup of original iPhone reviews that got everything completely wrong

A roundup of original iPhone reviews that got everything completely wrong

By on July 1, 2016 at 10:56 AM.

When the iPhone burst onto the scene in 2007, it was evident that the world of mobile technology would never be the same. While the original iPhone admittedly had its fair share of shortcomings (it lacked 3G, MMS support, copy and paste etc.), its multitouch display and full web browser were immediate game-changers. Without equivocation, the iPhone quickly, if not instantly, became the blueprint upon which all other smartphone manufacturers based their own hardware and software designs.

Yesterday we highlighted a number of positive reviews that accompanied the release of the original iPhone nine years ago this week. But as tends to be the case in the tech world, not everyone at the time was able to appreciate the immediate impact that the iPhone was poised to exert over the entire tech industry. Rather predictably, an onslaught of short-sighted and pessimistic reviews tended to hone in on all of the features the iPhone lacked rather than looking at all of the revolutionary new features it introduced into the mainstream. Some reviews, believe it or not, even criticized the iPhone for boasting too many features.

Apple is rumored to launch the iPhone 7 in a new color this year. After last year’s rose gold iPhone, we’re going to get either a blue or black new option this year, according to reports that are yet to be confirmed. Designers are having a field day with these rumors, creating all sorts of 3D renders of the blue or “Space Black” iPhone 7. Martin Hajek, one of our favorite artists when it comes to creating images of unreleased Apple devices based on the latest rumors, has his own take on a black iPhone 7. More →

Apple reportedly interested in acquiring Jay-Z’s Tidal music service

Apple is currently eying an acquisition of Tidal, the music streaming service and Apple Music competitor started by rapper Jay-Z. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s interest in Tidal is currently exploratory, which is to say that a deal between the two companies isn’t anywhere close to being finalized just yet. The report further adds that Apple’s underlying interest in Tidal stems from the service’s close relationship with artists.

Spotify is furious at Apple because it’s not a non-profit

By on June 30, 2016 at 2:54 PM.

There’s a big problem with building a business on the back of other companies’ businesses: You have to play by their rules.

There are countless examples of companies losing their cool when a free ride comes to an end. Twitter is an example that instantly comes to mind. Developers spent so long building apps and services utilizing free access to Twitter’s APIs and its users’ data. They made money — a whole lot of money — with these services and paid nothing to Twitter as they did. Then, when Twitter made some changes to its model that impacted many developers’ products, they flipped.

Fast forward to this week, when Spotify’s general counsel sent a letter to Apple’s lawyers, basically slamming the company for not giving Spotify a free ride while it pulls in millions in fees from iPhone and iPad users. More →

iPhone 7 Price Storage Tiers

This is the iPhone 7 leak we’ve been waiting for

This is the iPhone 7 leak we’ve been waiting for

A few days ago, a sketchy leak from China showing the purported pricing structure for the iPhone 7 series hinted that Apple would finally ditch the 16GB storage tier, and replace it with a 32GB iPhone. Strangely enough, that leak suggested the iPhone 7 would be available in three versions, including one 4.7-inch model and two 5.5-inch variations (Plus and Pro), just as some early iPhone 7 rumors claimed.

Now a second report from China seems to reinforce last week’s story, and we sincerely hope it turns out to be accurate. More →

Apple’s iPhone turns nine: 5 ways it’s still better than Android

Apple’s iPhone turns nine: 5 ways it’s still better than Android

By on June 30, 2016 at 11:24 AM.

Apple changed the world nine years ago when it released the first iPhone. It sounds hyperbolic but I assure you, the original iPhone quite literally reshaped the mobile industry. It also changed the way we access information and connect with each other. The giants of the industry at the time have now all but vanished. Android, which was being developed as a terrible BlackBerry copy, was reimagined and released as the platform we now know.

There have been plenty of retrospective pieces covering the iPhone to celebrate its nine-year anniversary, and some have been fairly interesting. But in light of all the negativity currently surrounding Apple’s next-generation iPhone, I thought it might be nice to look at some of the ways Apple’s mobile phone is still far better than its chief rival, Android.
