Yahoo’s Celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day

yahooaccessibility:

By Mike Shebanek, Senior Director of Accessibility

This week Yahoos everywhere celebrated the fifth annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) dedicated to raising awareness of the more than 1 billion people worldwide that have a disability. The idea is simple: get people talking, thinking and learning about what it means to enable equal access.

At Yahoo, we work every day to create online products and services that can be enjoyed by everyone, including those with disabilities. Whether a person is disabled or not, products that are conceived and designed with every individual in mind are simply better products. Great design demands nothing less.

At our headquarters in Sunnyvale,  The Yahoo Accessibility Team hosted an all-day open house in its renown Accessibility Lab, a place where Yahoos can explore common disability issues, through a variety of activities including the use of “color blind” goggles, gloves that inhibit dexterity, noise-generating (and cancelling) headphones—even simple things like using only a physical keyboard to navigate and use apps on smart phone. Then visitors learn to successfully use assistive technology like screen readers, magnifiers, high-contrast settings, speech control, closed captioning, switch controls, and alternate input devices, with our products just like our users do. These experiences enable our team to better understand and develop solutions that not only make our products more accessible, but fun, efficient, and useful for everyone.

Accessibility Team member Darren Burton teaching fellow Yahoos how to use a screen reader in the Yahoo Accessibility Lab

Yahoos who weren’t able to visit the lab were able to make GAAD meaningful by taking part in simple activities at their desk and on their mobile phones individually with their teams. Some of the activities included finding and fixing software bugs specific to accessibility while others included taking time to learning how to use a new accessibility tool like a color contrast analyzer or the new Android Accessibility Scanner.  There were even activities for non-technical Yahoos who were encouraged to take a few minutes and use their computer without a mouse or trackpad to better understand the issues facing those who are only able use a keyboard or alternate input device.

Topping the week on May 19th, Global Accessibility Awareness Day, its founders Jennison Asuncion and Joe Devon hosted a fantastic event at Mozilla in San Francisco inviting everyone in the Bay area to celebrate with great food, great company and a variety of presentations. It was my honor to be selected to kick off the celebration with a presentation on the future of digital accessibility and the important work of a great new initiative called Teach Access.org created to ensure the future of digital accessibility.

GAAD founders Jennison Asuncion and Joe Devon open the celebration

What an incredible week it’s been! If you’d like to learn more, I encourage you to check out the many GAAD activities listed on the GAAD.org web site and a recent article posted by the Daily Dot which took an in-depth look at what tech companies, including Yahoo, are doing to raise awareness and make their products more accessible. And, like we do at Yahoo, make every day Accessibility Awareness Day!

Yahoo Doubles Down on Video at 2016 NewFront

By Lisa Utzschneider, Chief Revenue Officer

image

Today at our Newfront event in New York City, we’re sharing the latest updates on high-quality video content across our four core verticals: news, sports, finance and lifestyle. We have a focused strategy to bring the best short-form and live programming to our users, and opportunities for our advertisers.

But it’s not just about our programming. We offer some of the best native and programmatic video solutions in the market via BrightRoll and Yahoo Gemini, our ad tech platforms. It’s the combination of Yahoo’s world-class content, technology and unique data that is critical for advertisers in 2016 and makes Yahoo an important partner.

In fact, video advertising is one of the fastest growing areas of our business, up 64% in 2015, and our new approach will help amplify this growth. Our team produced 54% more video in 2015 than in 2014, with over 8,000 video segments coming out of our state-of-the-art studios in Los Angeles, New York and Sunnyvale.

Compared to a year ago, video viewers on Yahoo are now consuming 55% more videos and spending 85% more time with this content on average. That translates into meaningful opportunities for marketers.

Highlights from Yahoo’s 2016 Video Programming

Yahoo News holds the No.1 spot in its category for total traffic (comScore Media Metrix, March 2016) and is a trusted destination for breaking news, featuring some of the best industry voices including Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric, global correspondent Bianna Golodryga, national political columnist Matt Bai, and investigative journalists Michael Isikoff.

  • The Katie Couric Interview: Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric is known for being one of the best interviewers and this series spotlights people who are making headlines. • Cities Rising: In “Cities Rising” Katie Couric visits cities around the country and introduces viewers to people who are making a difference in their communities as they focus on urban renewal.

Lifestyle (Yahoo Beauty, Yahoo Style, Polyvore, and Entertainment) has long attracted a massive audience and with the acquisition of Polyvore we see a huge opportunity to redefine consumers’ experiences on Yahoo in this area.

  • 60-second Style Hacks: Insider secrets, tips and tricks from Style expert Joe Zee.
  • Look at Me With Joe Zee:  We talk to women on the street and get the real story about what inspires their look.
  • Brave New Beauty: Explore the bold side of beauty and how you can take your look one step further with hair color, cut, makeup and nails.
  • Superfan: All the best watercooler moments including awards coverage, behind the scenes action, and TV and movie trailer breakdowns.

We also shared updates and highlighted new advertising opportunities for our brand and agency partners. Top brands like Lexus are partnering with Yahoo to connect with fans through video, display, and native advertising and we shared a new case study from their sponsorship of Yahoo Sports’ Tourney Pick'em this year. We also expanded our open viewability measurement to include native video in Yahoo Gemini, through our partnership with Moat. Yahoo offers guaranteed viewability from Moat and other accredited third party vendors for display, video and native video ad formats across our ad platforms.

This is just the beginning. There is more to come as we we continue building our ad offerings and video content in our core verticals where we have a strong foothold and will continue to grow.

Reinforcing Our Commitment to Hadoop

yahoohadoop:

image

10 years after Hadoop was born right here at Yahoo, we’re as committed as ever to improving the technology and sharing it with the community. The past few weeks highlighted Yahoo’s efforts at two important, open forums: the 2016 Hadoop Summit in Dublin and the 52nd Bay Area Hadoop User Group (HUG) Meetup.

Yahoo co-hosts Hadoop Summits annually with Hortonworks in both Europe and North America. The Dublin Summit earlier this month was our largest-ever held in Europe. Yahoo’s keynote and technical sessions were very-well received; in those talks, Sr. Director of Cloud and Big Data Platforms Sumeet Singh spoke about our data tech innovations including CaffeOnSpark (for distributed deep learning), Omid (for managing transactions atop HBase), Data Sketches (for interactive queries), and leading contributions to the advancement of Apache Hadoop (for better cluster efficiencies), Apache Storm (for releasing 1.0), and Apache HBase (for scaling clusters to host millions of regions).

Check out Sumeet’s keynote and deep-dive talks here:

Last week, we also hosted our second HUG Meetup of the year. It was great to have over 150 industry colleagues join us on campus in Sunnyvale for three presentations on various aspects of Hadoop. We strongly believe there is mutual benefit to sharing our latest learnings and innovations, and invite all those in the community to join the group and future meetups.

Polyvore Style Insider at Coachella

Last week, we gave community member yellowgrapes a VIP experience of Coachella. She took over our Snapchat and Instagram to give you the first look at what was happening at Coachella.

Wondering how YOU can be the next Coachella Style Insider? All you have to do is get involved in the Polyvore community and create more sets to share and express yourself. Check out our Style Insider page to learn more about the program and the amazing opportunities you can experience! Keep up the great creating!

Now let’s see what Jee has to say about her experience.

How was it?

It was an amazing experience!!!! It was very exhilarating to be in the crowds with music lovers. It was a dream come true to see Guns N’ Roses because they are a timeless band. The atmosphere was really lively and fun. Even though my feet were killing me at the end of each day, it was all worth it. The VIP pass was really helpful because there were no lines for restrooms, water stations or food vendors. Also, it was easy to get in and out of the festival through the VIP area. I really enjoyed resting at the tents because of the nice cushions and the availability of outlets. There were so many beautiful, well-dressed people. It gave me an idea of what the trends for summer would be. The resort and the shuttle made the experience comfortable. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. I will cherish this past weekend forever.

Musician's Style: Chvrches

What was the highlight of your weekend?

It was the whole experience, but if I had to be specific, it would be the second day. The lineup was absolutely amazing, with performers like CHVRCHES, Disclosure, Ice Cube and Gun N’ Roses. Those five hours were the most memorable for me. The artists gave very good performances and got the crowd going. Who was your favorite band? I would say Disclosure because Sam Smith and Lorde were the guests. It was a very good surprise that made the crowd excited, and everyone was just dancing. The stages were very pretty with the lights and the screens.

What were the top 3 festival trends this year?

The top 3 festival trends this year were crochet everything (dresses, crop tops, shorts), circle-frame sunglasses and space buns.

Celebrity Spottings: Kendall Jenner

Celebrity Spottings: Kendall Jenner by yellowgrapes featuring Forever 21

Did you see any celebrities?

Oh my goodness, I never, ever expected to see so many celebrities. I saw Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, Kylie Jenner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wiz Khalifa, Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss, Chanel Iman, Joe Jonas, The Weeknd, Bella Hadid, Sylvester Stallone, Tyler the Creator, Cindy Crawford and her daughter Kaia, and more.

Now that you just got back, do you have any tips for people going to Coachella?

It is very important to drink water because there were so many people passing out—I kept seeing security going back and forth to carry people out. Wear your most comfortable shoes. Don’t sacrifice comfort for fashion because at the end of the night your feet will be killing you, and you won’t be able to enjoy the performances. Cell phone service is not dependable, especially during prime times, so make sure to set up a meeting spot with your friends in case you lose each other. Also, bring cleansing wipes to wipe off all the dirt, and bring a bandana to cover your face during sand storms. The most important thing is to just have fun because those three days will fly by fast!

Embedded: Carousel of all of her Coachella sets.

Continue to follow her on Polyvore and Instagram.

Don’t forget to check out our Style Insider page to learn more about how you can experience Coachella, NYFW and more! Happy creating!

More than 80 Major CEOs, Business Leaders Demand North Carolina Repeal Discriminatory Law

HRC and Equality NC released a letter from more than 80 leading CEOs and business leaders calling on Governor Pat McCrory and the North Carolina General Assembly to repeal the radical provisions in the deeply discriminatory House Bill 2 that was rammed through the legislature last week.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer joined more than 80 CEOs and business leaders calling for the repeal of House Bill 2 in NC. As we’ve stated publicly in our diversity report (yahoo.com/diversity), we want all Yahoos to love coming to work every day, not just for their projects and the great perks, but for the inclusive culture where they can feel free to be themselves and thrive.

Local Businesses in Quincy, Wash., Show Support for Yahoo Ahead of Expansion

By Mike Coleman, Senior Director, Data Center Operations

We first began construction on our data center in Quincy, Washington back in 2006, and we’ve been proud to call Quincy and the surrounding region home ever since. Our Quincy data center is one of our three owned and operated data centers in the United States, and a key component of our data center architecture, serving hundreds of millions of users across our country and around the world.

We recently announced that we’re expanding our Quincy data center, and expect to open our new facility in summer 2016. Our expansion in Quincy is a reflection of our commitment to the people of Quincy, Grant County, and the State of Washington. Over the years, we’ve developed wonderful and lasting relationships with the local community, not just through the jobs we’ve created, but also through our charitable contributions and volunteer initiatives.

Harriet Weber, a volunteer at Quincy Valley Historical Society & Museum, summed up our commitment to the local community this way: “Since Yahoo first opened their data center, their team let us know they wanted to be part of the community. Yahoo has consistently supported small business in Quincy and given back through charitable efforts. Yahoo has been a neighbor and an active leader in our community, which has made a huge difference.”

Beyond the jobs we’re creating directly at our data center, we are extremely proud of the support we’re able to give to the local community. One great benefit we provide to Yahoo employees is access to free, delicious and healthy food. For our team in Quincy, we work with local restaurants and specialty grocery stores to supply daily meals for our teams including Idle Hour Eatery & Spirits, The Grainery, and Akins Harvest Foods.

Several of these owners shared their perspectives on the positive impact this has had on their businesses including Rhonda Rosenberger, owner of Idle Hour Eatery & Spirits: “We first opened our restaurant here in Quincy in 1985. With the economic downturn in 2008, we were considering putting the Idle Hour up for sale. Yahoo broke ground on their data center that year, and we began providing lunch to their team twice a week. In part because of the consistent Yahoo contract, we were able to stay open, bring back our business, and now we’re celebrating thirty years.”

Our decision to expand our data center is a direct result of the unbeatable mix Quincy offers: impressive local talent, abundant renewable energy sources, and Washington State’s commitment to creating an attractive business location. We’re thrilled to grow our team, and continue to deepen our relationships with the entire community in Quincy.

A Look Ahead: Yahoo’s 2016 NewFront

By Lisa Utzschneider, Chief Revenue Officer, Yahoo

2016 is a year of focus for Yahoo and with video advertising representing one of the fastest growing areas of our business, up 64% in 2015, we’re taking a new approach to the NewFronts. On May 4, we will host a private NewFront event at our New York office for our brand and agency partners. You can expect the event to be smaller and more intimate, designed to connect our advertisers directly with the video ad offerings that can meet their goals. We believe it’s important to provide our advertisers with less flash and more substance this year. Over the past year we have moved away from scripted long form series, and instead we are focused on short form and live video programming. With high quality content from our talented team of editors and key updates on our ad offerings, we will ensure that advertisers walk away knowing exactly what they can buy with Yahoo and how to buy it.

Over one billion people visit Yahoo every month because we provide some of the best short-form and live video programming available online. The Yahoo NewFront will reinforce our commitment to programming top quality video experiences across our News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle properties – four verticals where we see tremendous opportunity. Equally as important, we will highlight our native and programmatic video solutions and how advertisers can buy these through BrightRoll and Yahoo Gemini. In 2016, we’re more committed than ever to driving meaningful conversations that help our advertisers solve their specific needs and meet their objectives through the combination of data, content and technology.
