    Much harder to make a plausible alteration of words. With numerals, a forger easily changes 100 to 900 or even 11100. What's in the account?

    wait, but couldn't the alterer just change both? How would this prevent that? (Always interested in the history of forgery.)

    No: the true origins of word-numeral doubling lie in efforts to prevent fraudulent alteration—dating from the times of medieval scribes.

    I've always assumed this was from the days of bad fax or carbon copies - redundancy in case of a bad print.

    Sure they do. Double count instruments to make sure nothing is left in a body.

    Lawyer friend in letter to me: "Great seeing you and your two (2) daughters at the mall the other day." It wasn't a joke; it was dictated.

    What makes even less sense: lawyer emails me "we have reserved two (2) conference rooms." What is that for?

    Yes, Scott, but why adopt a protocol with built-in probabilities of contradiction and greater burdens of double-checking? Surgeons don't.

    Solution to incompetence is to do better, not eliminate simple belt/suspenders.

    Happens all the time in high-volume practice areas. Word-numeral doubling makes no sense except in negotiable instruments—to prevent fraud.

    That's a more obvious and inexcusable error than a typo. A typo is common and forgivable. That's just incompetent.

    Here's the problem, Scott: in much-copied forms, the numerals get changed but someone forgets the words. Yet words control over numerals.
