FAQ

Waze Carpool is in pilot mode and currently available to Bay Area employers and their employees by invite only.

Carpooling

  • If you’re an employer: Apply now

If you need a ride in the Bay Area, and your company is participating in the pilot program: get Waze Rider for free on Android or iOS. If eligible, the app will be enabled upon download. Schedule a ride and Waze Rider will look for the closest driver already planning a drive on your route. You must be 18 years or older to be a rider with Waze Carpool.

If you’re driving in the Bay Area: get Waze for free on Android or iOS and opt in to Carpool. After creating your driver profile you’ll be available to get ride requests on your route in the Bay Area. As soon as someone requests a ride on your commute, you’ll be notified and given the opportunity to accept or decline. You must be 21 years or older to give rides with Waze Carpool.
  • Waze Carpool connects riders and drivers with nearly identical commutes based on their home and work addresses. Thanks to Waze advanced mapping capabilities, the platform connects carpool partners from the same local community, making it easy to carpool with neighbors and colleagues you know or haven’t met yet.
  • Riders and drivers are matched based on pick up and drop off locations, verified by Waze, and set in advance through Waze Carpool. Since drivers(like riders) are on their way to work, they’ll be sticking to their regular commute route and giving a ride along the way.
  • Riders and drivers share the cost of gas for the trip. Ride payment is set in advance and money is transferred from riders to drivers automatically.
  • This employer pilot was developed to meet the needs along the Silicon Valley corridor. We're focused on reducing traffic when it's at its worst - which is rush hour - so Carpool is restricted to morning and evening commute hours. To increase the chances for a Waze Carpool ride, riders should request a ride a day in advance.
  • To make a positive impact on rush hour traffic, Waze Carpool is only available for two rides a day, one to work and one home.
  • Waze Carpool matches one rider to one driver, per one-way ride, to and/or from work.
  • Sorry but this request can’t be accommodated for either riders or drivers. Waze Carpool passengers must be least 18 years old. Also, because Waze drivers are on their way to work they may not be equipped to safely seat a young child in the car.
  • We’re starting on commute routes in the Bay Area with a limited group of employers. We plan to expand as we grow our user base.

Drivers

  • If you commute in the Bay Area, download the Waze app on Android or iOS, opt in to Carpool and we’ll send you ride requests from people who share a similar commute route.
  • Nope. Waze Carpool drivers are everyday people who use Waze to drive to work.
  • Waze Carpool focuses on covering costs, not generating an income. At most, you’ll receive 2 ride requests daily, located on your existing commute route at the time you’ll be driving on it. Also, riders pitch in for gas, making it a great way for drivers to save on commute costs.
  • Auto insurance policies in many states including California typically allow not for profit, share-the-expense carpooling. Waze Carpool is designed to help riders and drivers share the cost of carpooling on a given ride. It is not designed to allow a driver to make a profit or to earn a salary. Payments to the driver, by the rider, will always be less or equal to the cost of the particular drive, taking account of such factors as gas and vehicle depreciation.
  • Waze Carpool makes it easy to help a neighbor or colleague in your area. Detours are minimal so your drive to work is almost the same, you get to ride in the carpool lane, and the rider you pick up helps cover your commute costs - so why not? It’s also a greener and more social way to get to work and can really make a positive impact on your community.

Riders

  • If you’re participating in the pilot, get the Waze Rider app on Android or iOS, and submit a ride request based on your home and work locations. We’ll look for the best carpool partner on your commute route.
  • Waze Rider matches one rider to one driver, per one-way ride, to and/or from work.
  • Because riders are matched with Wazers using their own vehicles and on their way to work, we cannot guarantee the car will be wheelchair accessible. However, you can message your drivers when sending a ride request and inquire whether their vehicle can support your needs.
  • Door-to-door convenience: you get picked up and dropped off at the locations that work for you
Express carpool: You’re the only one getting a ride, no other stops on the way besides yours
Cost: you only pitch in to cover commute cost and payment is handled automatically
Green: Waze Rider supports a green way to get to work since you're driving with someone on a commute they’re taking anyway, with or without you.
A friendly start: Wazers have been helping each other on the roads for years. Now they want to help you get to work - it’s a more pleasant way to start and end the day.

Carpool Partners

Waze Carpool helps you find the closest carpool partner to ride with. Here are some tips to help you decide whether you want to ride together or not:

  • Check out the driver’s profile, which will always show that the phone number and email have been verified.
  • You can also check to see if drivers have verified their work organization, Facebook, or LinkedIn account.
  • Refer to the number of “thanks” received - the more “thanks” the better. (Waze Carpool lets you send thanks for a good experience or report any issues that may arise.)
  • Once a ride is set, you can message the driver before the ride
Waze riders are matched to Waze drivers based on proximity, route and optimal timing. As a rider you can always decline or block a specific driver if you choose.
